7) A doll's House, Part 2 (Original)
Joué durant 2 mois 3 semaines
Première preview: 01 April 2017 Première: 27 April 2017 Dernière: 23 July 2017
Compositeur: *** Divers • Parolier: *** Divers • Libettiste: *** Divers • Metteur en scène: Sam Gold • Chorégraphe: Avec: Laurie Metcalf, Chris Cooper, Jayne Houdyshell, Condola Rashad
Commentaire: One of the most important works in theatre history gets a sequel in 2017, when A Doll's House, Part 2 debuts on Broadway. Written by Lucas Hnath (The Christians), this new play imagines Nora Helmer returning to her family, years after she walked out on them in the climatic moments of Ibsen's 1879 masterpiece. Held up as both a milestone for playwriting and women's rights, A Doll's House is certainly a hard act to follow, yet the fact that producer Scott Rudin is premiering Part 2 on Broadway suggests that Hnath work is something special. (plus)
Presse: "A door that was once slammed so hard that the noise could be heard around the world is now being knocked upon, most insistently. In the opening moments of Lucas Hnath’s smart, funny and utterly engrossing new play, which opened Thursday night at the Golden Theater, audience members laugh at the sound of the demanding tattoo being beaten upon that door. That’s because they have probably guessed who’s on the other side.”" Ben Brantley for New York Times
"A door closes — well, slams — and a window opens to a sequel. Lucas Hnath’s compact and provocative comedy “A Doll’s House, Part 2” picks up after Henrik Ibsen’s 1879 classic ended." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News
"If Ibsen’s play is about suffocation, Hnath’s is about airing things out. Modern in its language, mordant in its humor and suspenseful in its plotting—Nora, now a scandalous writer, needs Torvald’s help to avoid being blackmailed by a judge—the play judiciously balances conflicting ideas about freedom, love and responsibility. And Sam Gold’s exemplary direction keeps you hanging on each turn of argument and twist of knife. Everything about the production works. It’s a slam dunk." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York
"Sam Gold directs in his signature spare style. Set in what is essentially a bare space, there is little action in this tale but much insight, and Gold shrewdly allows the words to take center stage, amplified by some spectacular acting." Roma Torre for NY1
"One of the most famous exits in modern drama prompts an entrance that bristles with tension, provocation and unexpected subversive humor in Lucas Hnath's terrific new play, A Doll's House, Part 2." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter
"So, did Godot ever show up? Were George and Martha able to save their marriage? And whatever happened to Nora after she slammed the door? In “A Doll’s House, Part 2,” Lucas Hnath pulls off the dramatic parlor trick of bringing back Ibsen’s iconic heroine — in the incomparable person of Laurie Metcalf — to answer that question 15 years later. Despite the modern idiom that Hnath slings around with gleeful humor, it’s amazing how women’s lives haven’t changed." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Compositeur: *** Divers • Parolier: *** Divers • Libettiste: *** Divers • Metteur en scène: Simon McBurney • Chorégraphe: Avec: Simon McBurney
Commentaire: The Encounter stars only one man, creator and director Simon McBurney, alone on a darkly lit stage, yet it is one of the most startling and original theater experiences of recent years. (plus)
Presse: "Surely, no production on Broadway has ever thrown the doors of perception open as widely as 'The Encounter,' Simon McBurney’s astonishing one-man show." Ben Brantley for New York Times
"It’s unlike anything else on Broadway, and it is a head trip. But sometimes 'The Encounter' goes in one ear and out the other." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News
"In brief: 'Dances With Wolves' with drug trips and no intermission." Johnny Oleksinski for New York Post
"In this primal, lysergic movie for the brain, McBurney covers a dazzling array of topics: the nature of time, technology’s deadening of mental powers, and the spiritual cost of civilized life. Part mystic thriller, part tricksy aural illusion, The Encounter offers a meeting of ear, mind and soul you will never forget." David Cote for Time Out New York
"The Encounter is an extraordinarily visceral, often hypnotic piece of storytelling." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter
"Simon McBurney’s solo show for his company Complicite is quite extraordinary: a profound meditation on our relationship to time and a captivating piece of high-definition storytelling." Matt Trueman for Variety

5) Eclipsed (Broadway Transfer)
Joué durant 3 mois 2 semaines
Première preview: 23 February 2016 Première: 06 March 2016 Dernière: 19 June 2016
Commentaire: Transféré de l'Off-Broadway (Joseph Papp Public Theatre) (plus)
Presse: "For all its harrowing power, 'Eclipsed,' headlined by the Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, one of the most radiant young actors to be seen on Broadway in recent seasons, shines with a compassion that makes us see beyond the suffering to the indomitable humanity of its characters." Charles Isherwood for New York Times
"It’s a common lament that there are no good roles for women. But Danai Gurira, a playwright and actress known as Michonne on 'The Walking Dead,' has packed this harrowing, albeit sometimes heavy-handed, 2008 drama with five of them." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News
"Nyong'o loses herself utterly in the searing and stunning play 'Eclipsed,'... also marking the important Broadway bows for playwright Danai Gurira and director Liesl Tommy." Mark Kennedy for Associated Press
"The show hits the sweet spot for the serious New York theater crowd — the ideal audience for this intense drama — that often feels overlooked and underserved on Broadway." Marilyn Stasio for Variety
