Commentaire: With costumes and sets sumptuously designed by Christopher Oram, drawing inspiration from its source material as well as Norwegian folklore, the fictional kingdom of Arendelle is brought to stunning, three-dimensional life on stage. In addition, the movie's screenwriter Jennifer Lee has fleshed out the book for the Broadway musical to delve deeper into the torn relationship of the two lead protagonists, sisters Elsa and Anna, whilst the Oscar-winning, husband-and-wife songwriting duo of Robert Lopez and Kristin Anderson-Lopez offer up more than double the amount of songs as those cherished from the animated classic. New additions such as Elsa's anthemic numbers "Dangerous to Dream" and "Monster," as well as Anna's emotionally stirring climax in "True Love," are moving, theatrical alternatives to the infectiously upbeat familiarity of "Love is an Open Door" and "Fixer Upper". And "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" seems to take on a new level of poignancy on stage. Of course, the show-stealing transformation sequence during Elsa's "Let It Go" number at the end of Act I promises the Disney magic Broadway audiences have grown accustomed to over the years and now demand. Kudos to Finn Ross' video design and Jeremy Chernick's special effects, who spectacularly aid the birth of the Snow Queen and her ice palace under the gaze of the mesmerizing aurora borealis. (plus)
Presse: "The problem has nothing to do with the performances, which are never less than professional if seldom much more than that. As Elsa, Caissie Levy booms out her numbers with astonishing aplomb — her “Let It Go” really is sensational — and, as Anna, Patti Murin makes a charming madcap. Both find what nuances they can in characters very narrowly drawn to type. It’s therefore a huge relief, and feels fully genuine, when they get to share a fleeting smile or giggle. That they almost never sing together as they head out on separate adventures is a structural problem no one has solved." Jesse Green for New York Times
"The family-friendly musical “Frozen” — based on the 2013 animated blockbuster that’s made $1.3 billion worldwide — is bound to enchant young fans. After all, it’s cool seeing cartoon heroines Elsa, who blasts blizzards with a wrist flick, and Anna, her adoring but awkward sister, in 3-D. Maybe even better is spending time with huggable snowman Olaf and reindeer Sven. On the other hand, adults, with or without tots, may not be as thrilled by this polished but predictable and wow-free adaptation." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News
"This Frozen is like Elsa in protective gloves; it plays things safe, and perhaps that will be enough for fans of the movie who want to see some version of it on Broadway. But in its reluctance to embrace its own potential enchantments, the show will likely leave many people lukewarm." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York
"Watching Frozen, the first mental readjustment you have to make is that despite its on-trend female-empowerment thrust and its marriage of traditional stage techniques with technological innovation, this is fundamentally an old-fashioned fairy tale for tykes and tweens. In fact, it has more in common with Disney's pathfinding stage success, Beauty and the Beast, than with the more boldly reimagined shows that followed." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter
"Caissie Levy is stunning as Elsa, the beautiful princess with the cursed gift to turn her kingdom into ice, and Patti Murin makes a darling Anna, the earthbound princess whose love for her sister is the only thing that can set Elsa free." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Avec: Kevin Kline (Garry Essendine), Cobie Smulders (Joanna Lyppiatt), Kate Burton (Liz Essendine), Kristine Nielsen (Monica Reed), Bhavesh Patel (Roland Maule), Reg Rogers (Morris Dixon), Matt Bittner (Fred), Ellen Harvey (Miss Erikson), Peter Francis James (Henry Lyppiatt), Tedra Millan (Daphne Stillington), Sandra Shipley (Lady Saltburn)
Commentaire: Noel Coward's sparkling farce Present Comedy is revived on Broadway for the fifth time, with Oscar and two-time Tony winner Kevin Kline (On The Twentieth Century, The Pirates of Penzance) in the lead role. Described as 'semi-autobiographical' by its author, this zippy comedy centers on actor Gary Essendine, who is trying his best to cope with a mounting number of distractions on the eve of his tour to Africa. Last seen on Broadway in 2010, this latest production of Present Laughter is directed by Moritz von Stuelpnagel (Hand to God). (plus)
Presse: "It’s high time we were reminded again of what a great physical comedian Kevin Kline is. Playing an aging matinee idol in the bouncy new revival of Noël Coward’s 'Present Laughter,' Mr. Kline blissfully plies the witty athleticism and derring-do that won him two Tony Awards ('On the 20th Century,' 'The Pirates of Penzance') and an Oscar ('A Fish Called Wanda') in his youth." Ben Brantley for New York Times
"Under the smart direction of Moritz von Stuelpnagel the production is in fine feather." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News
"Kline enlivens each moment with palpable zest and impeccable style, arrogant brio shading into middle-aged insecurity with a twitch of his perfectly trimmed mustache. He must do more Coward or share his secrets. If Kline can’t immediately commit to Private Lives and Blithe Spirit, we may resort to cloning." David Cote for Time Out New York
"'Present Laughter' is back on Broadway for the sixth time since it first opened in 1946, and you could say Noel Coward's sublime comedy of manners is as delightful, delicious, and 'delovely' as ever. And what makes the current production stand out even more is Kevin Kline's bravura performance. After a ten-year absence, he is making a glorious return to the Great White Way." Roma Torre for NY1
"Talk about a match made in heaven. Kevin Kline was born to do Noel Coward, and his casting as Garry Essendine, the 1930s stage star and aging playboy at the center of his own eternal melodrama in Present Laughter, yields a performance of unimpeachable skill, made all the more delectable by its lightness of touch." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter
"Whatever would we do without Kevin Kline? In an age of lesser stars, he’s a bona fide matinee idol of the ideal age and with the urbane sensibility to do justice to sophisticated scribes like Noel Coward. 'Present Laughter' is a delicious drawing-room comedy that Coward dashed off in 1942 to amuse himself and his friends, while engaging in a bit of sober self-reflection. Kline relishes the comic challenge in this snazzy production directed by Moritz von Stuelpnagel." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaire:
Presse: Les critiques sont bonnes:
"'Sophomoric' is the right adjective for 'Something Rotten!,' and presumably its creators wouldn’t have it any other way." Ben Brantley for New York Times
"The supremely silly 'Something Rotten!' is the musical love child of 'The Carol Burnett Show' and 'Forbidden Broadway.' In other words, this showbiz offspring has some darn fine DNA." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News
"A deliriously entertaining new musical comedy that is devilishly clever under its goofy exterior... Yep, this is a blockbuster." Elisabeth Vincentelli for New York Post
"'Something Rotten!' has established itself as Broadway’s funniest, splashiest, slap-happiest musical comedy in at least 400 years." David Cote for Time Out New York
"'Something Rotten!,' written by three guys making their Broadway debuts, is fresh and hysterical and irreverent. It's easily the funniest thing to arrive on Broadway since 'The Book of Mormon.'" Mark Kennedy for The Associated Press
"This is a big, brash meta-musical studiously fashioned in the mold of Monty Python's 'Spamalot,' 'The Producers,' and 'The Book of Mormon,' loaded with crowd-pleasing showstoppers, deliciously puerile gags and an infectious love of the form it so playfully skewers." David Rooney for The Hollywood Reporter
"Although comic desperation descends on the second act, it’s still a deliriously funny show." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaire:
Presse: "The experience of watching the film was like being tickled, gently but steadily, into a state of mounting hysteria. From the get-go, the musical version, which stars a credible Zach Braff (doing Mr. Allen) and a misused Marin Mazzie(doing Norma Desmond), feels more like being head-butted by linebackers. Make that linebackers in blinding sequins." Ben Brantley for New York Times
"Showgirls dressed like frisky tigers shake their moneymakers near the beginning of Woody Allen’s “Bullets Over Broadway” — and they’re a symbol, for this musical certainly works its tail off to tickle and delight." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News
"Woody Allen’s adaptation of his 1994 movie checks all the boxes: zingers and puns, slapstick and visual gags, leggy showgirls and tap-dancing chorus boys, hammy stars and lavish set pieces. This is defiantly old-fashioned entertainment, and boy does it hit the spot!" Elisabeth Vincentelli for New York Post
"It's an extremely funny, devilishly entertaining show from start to finish." Robert Feldberg for The Record
"The show is a watered-down champagne cocktail that too seldom gets beyond its recycled jokes and second-hand characterizations to assert an exciting new identity." David Rooney for The Hollywood Reporter
"The book (from Woody Allen’s own screenplay for his 1994 film) is feeble on laughs, and certain key performers don’t seem comfortable navigating the earthy comic idiom of burlesque. So, let’s call it close — but no cigar." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaire: Madeline Kahn left the show early in the run after having missed 10 performances in two months. She was replaced by her understudy, Judy Kaye. At the time, it was reported that the role was too vocally demanding for her to perform eight times a week, and that she had proposed having Judy Kaye play matinees.
Hal Prince stated in later interviews that she was having trouble commanding the energy to play physical comedy eight times a week, and his statements suggest that he and possibly the writers tried to persuade her to leave. At least a few critics, having attended critics' previews rather than opening night (when Prince says she was wonderful), did find her performance a bit lackluster.
Between the out-of-town opening and the Broadway opening, the role was made more vocally demanding. It may be that this was done at Kahn's suggestion. It does seem that after the Broadway opening, at some performances she sang lower notes in place of some of the high notes that had been added.
