Joué durant  5 mois 1 semaine

Nb de preview: 47 previews
Nb de représentations: 181 représentations
Première preview: 28 February 2018
Première: 12 April 2018
Dernière: 16 September 2018

Compositeur: Richard Rodgers •
Parolier: Oscar Hammerstein II •
Libettiste: Oscar Hammerstein II •
Metteur en scène: Jack O'Brien •
Chorégraphe: Justin Peck •
Avec: Joshua Henry (as Billy Bigelow), Jessie Mueller (as Julie Jordan), Renée Fleming (as Nettie Fowler), Lindsay Mendez (as Carrie Pipperidge), Alexander Gemignani (as Enoch Snow), Margaret Colin (as Mrs. Mullins), Amar Ramasar (as Jigger), Brittany Pollack (as Louise), and John Douglas Thompson (as Starkeeper)

Commentaire: "You'll Never Walk Alone"... Those reassuring words once again ring out on the Great White Way with the Broadway revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein's classic musical Carousel, which features a starry cast headlined by two-time Tony Award nominee Joshua Henry, Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller, and opera sensation Renée Fleming.

Infused with brand new choreography by New York City Ballet's Justin Peck, the dance sequences range from dreamily graceful to strikingly masculine and have given new life to this timeless classic. In addition, the difficult theme of domestic abuse is sensitively addressed by director Jack O'Brien for the modern day audience and we are reminded how progressive Rodgers & Hammerstein actually were to shine a light on the topic in a Broadway musical way back in 1945.

This production boasts a beautifully crafted scenic design by Santo Loquasto that allows the audience to admire and be inspired to use their own imaginations in equal measures. He paints a picture of a bygone era that has a deliberately hazy atmosphere about it, as if being recalled from a distant memory. It blends with Rodgers & Hammerstein's sumptuous score to great effect and the production delivers an inescapable air of nostalgia as a result.  (plus)

Presse: "Blame it on God, or the fates, or — to use the metaphor of choice here — the stars. But when Billy meets Julie in the heartfelt, half-terrific revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel... you can tell they’ve been felled by a force beyond their comprehension or control." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"Carousel has such a glorious score that the music always shines bright — even in a revival as wobbly as the one now on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"Carousel's sumptuous new Broadway revival plows steadily through the show’s darker currents. Director Jack O’Brien invites us to admire the show as an exemplar of classic American musical theater, lovingly emphasizing its virtues." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"Carousel embraces darkness and brutality while balancing sorrow with jubilation, tragedy with redemption in a show whose emotional complexity is equaled by its ravishing score. What a gift to have it back on Broadway in a magnificently sung revival that breathes pulsing new life into this shimmering masterwork." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"Audiences encountering Joshua Henry's electrifying performance as the charismatic but star-cursed Billy Bigelow will long remember the experience. In this new Broadway revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel, Henry shows off the exceptionally beautiful voice of a genuine actor-singer, a voice that while warm and mellow, can also soar with joy and tremble in despair." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Joué durant  9 mois 3 semaines

Nb de preview: 32 previews
Nb de représentations: 336 représentations
Première preview: 18 October 2016
Première: 14 November 2016
Dernière: 03 September 2017

Compositeur: Dave Malloy •
Parolier: Dave Malloy •
Libettiste: Dave Malloy •
Metteur en scène: Rachel Chavkin •
Chorégraphe: Sam Pinkleton •
Avec: Josh Groban (Pierre), Denée Benton (Natasha), Brittain Ashford (Sonya), Gelsey Bell (Princess Mary), Nicholas Belton (Bolkonsky/Andrey), Nick Choksi (Dolokhov), Amber Gray (Helene), Grace McLean (Marya D), Paul Pinto (Balaga), Lucas Steele (Anatole)

Commentaire: After years of speculation, Josh Groban finally made his Broadway debut! However his turn in this ravishing adaptation of the most scandalous pages from Tolstoy's epic War and Peace will end on July 2nd. Reimagined as a transporting electro-pop opera, writer Dave Malloy immerses us in the decadent world of the Russian Aristocracy, with all the trappings of romance, passion, caviar and vodka as the lives of the titular characters are changed forever under the light of certain cosmic phenomenon.  (plus)

Presse: "The Imperial Theater, where the rapturous musical 'Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812' blazed opened on Monday night, has never looked more imperial — or felt more intimate. Who would have guessed that Dave Malloy’s gorgeous pop opera, adapted from a slice of Tolstoy’s 'War and Peace,' would land on Broadway with all its signal virtues intact, and in some ways heightened?" Charles Isherwood for New York Times

"Josh Groban makes a terrific Broadway debut in the ear- and eye-popping 'Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812'... the show is bold and affecting and a welcome addition to the Great White Way." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"Despite the romantic trauma of the plot, The Great Comet leaves you glowing with hope: for redemption through kindness in the face of ruin, and for a brighter future in the face of terrible omens. It’s a wonderful, soul-stirring escape." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"It’s best for people who want to say they experienced a cool immersive experience on Broadway, but one without any heart. It’s pure showmanship with none of the emotional payoff." Mark Kennedy for Associated Press

"It arrives on Broadway in superlative shape, its humor, emotional content and rip-roaring storytelling every bit as vibrant as its madly infectious score." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"A luscious, 360-degree immersive experience that feels like being smothered in velvet." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Presse: Les critiques sont très bonnes:

"Scenic tweaking aside, and an orchestra shrunk to 20 from 27, this 'Les Miz' will offend none of the musical’s fans with any directorial innovations, and will give them a chance to assess how a new generation of performers meets the challenges of the score." Charles Isherwood for New York Times

"It arrives with fine new orchestrations that allow us to again hear the score’s many riches live, without the extreme closeups pocking the Hollywood version." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"People don’t just sing, they belt to the heavens. And in this new revival, you mostly soar with them." Elisabeth Vincentelli for New York Post

"There's nothing startlingly different, but, under the direction of Laurence Connor and James Powell, it's been freshly conceived, with new staging and design ideas — there are projections based on Hugo's drawings — and thoughtful acting choices that, all together, make the show a more intimate experience." Robert Feldberg for The Record

"This reboot feels faster, grittier, gloomier and, above all, more emphatic than ever, which is saying something for a show that was always an unrelenting assault on the tear ducts." David Rooney for The Hollywood Reporter

"Unlike the tentative 2006 revival, this one is a solid piece of theatrical architecture, built to survive every critical arrow shot through its heart." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Presse: BEN BRANTLEY for NEW YORK TIMES says, "This show both artfully anatomizes and brazenly exploits the most fundamental and enduring appeal of musicals themselves."
JOE DZIEMIANOWICZ for THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS says, "That rare production - one that brings all the elements together and creates a fresh emotional experience."
BARABARA HOFFMAN for NEW YORK POST says, "The best gift from Britain since Harry Potter."
JOHN SIMON for BLOOMBERG says, "Really does have something for everyone, and that something is, gloriously, art."
ELYSA GARDNER for USA TODAY says, "In one sequence, Billy imagines and shadows an older version of himself, and both leap across the stage as the rapturous strains of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake swell around them. And for a few moments — no matter where you're from — it's impossible to not be transported by this kid's amazing grace. "
LINDA WINNER for NEWSDAY says, "Seriously thrilling as it is deeply lovable."
DAVID SHEWARD for BACK STAGE says"One of the smartest and most satisfying Broadway musicals in years."
ROBERT FELDBERG for THE RECORD says, "It's hard to call "Billy Elliot" a great musical – it's not unique enough for that – but you won't easily find one that's more generously entertaining."
JAQUES LE SOURD for JOURNAL NEWS says, "The Broadway season's first big musical hit."
RICHARD ZOGLIN for TIME MAGAZINE says, "Billy Elliot does almost everything a musical should do, and more."
MICHAEL KUCHWARA for ASSOCIATED PRESS says, "It's not often that a musical comes along that is as ambitious as it is emotional — and then succeeds on both counts."
DAVID ROONEY for VARIETY says, "That 'Billy Elliot' is as much an elegy as a celebration is what makes it such a winner."

Presse: FIONA MOUNTFORD for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "a Christmas cracker...busy from the start with novel-compressing short, sharp bursts of action on an ever-moving revolve, attains transcendence." ALASTAIR MACAULAY for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "There are many good things in Helen Edmundson’s adaptation...At every point, the story is clear and often gripping." LYN GARDNER for THE GUARDIAN says, "Beautifully acted by a large cast, and exquisitely sung by a choir, this is a deeply satisfying evening that celebrates parent-child love and reminds us that our children do not belong to us, they belong only to themselves." SUSAN ELKIN for THE STAGE says, "This arresting, sumptuous, fast-moving production is one of the most powerful pieces of theatre I’ve seen in a long time. I cried, laughed and gasped - sometimes within a single minute." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Just as special, just as moving, the second time around...Melly Still directs a beautifully fluent and uncluttered production that handles the complex narrative with clarity and panache...This is not a show for the excessively squeamish, or children under 12, but I suspect almost everyone else will be bowled over by its power and humanity." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Engrossing...bold, robust and never the least prurient or morbid."
