Commentaire: Following a successful run at off-Broadway's Atlantic Theater Company in fall 2016, David Yazbek and Itamar Moses' musical adaptation of the 2007 israeli film "The Band's Visit" arrived on Broadway with its original stars Katrina Lenk and Golden Globe and three-time Emmy Award winner Tony Shalhoub.
Perhpas the most hyped Broadway opening of fall 2017, The Band's Visit is simply unlike anything else on the Great White Way. As the musical begins, a projection tells us that “Once not long ago a group of musicians came to Israel from Egypt.” A second projection then reads: “You probably didn’t hear about it. It wasn’t very important.” And with that, we are gently lulled into 90 minutes of a story where, as those self-deprecating words predict, nothing truly important happens... And yet, everything that could happen in a group of characters' lives, does happen.
The Band's Visit is about a meeting of two groups of strangers, brought together by a simple mishap. Instead of ending up in the bustling city of Petah Tikva in Israel, an Egyptian police band accidentally end up in the small, isolated town of the similarly-pronounced Bet Hatikva and are taken in by the locals for one night. Although the setting is the catalyst for David Yazbek's beautiful, Middle Eastern-infused score, you could pick this story up and place it in any isolated town or village anywhere in the world. It is this universal aspect to the story that audiences are connecting with. A small, "unimportant" story is speaking volumes about humanity and how we can form bonds with those we usually wouldn't encounter in our regular lives. How do we overcome our loneliness? How do we re-connect with our estranged loved ones?
The cast is filled with talented actor/musicians who are often omnipresent on stage, blurring the lines between musical numbers and scene changes, creating quite the non-traditional musical in the process. The captivating leading duo of Dina, a café owner in the town, and Tewfiq, the band's conductor, are worlds apart in their manners and sensibilities and yet set a story in motion that has us crying out for a sequel.
The Band's Visit is the runaway hit of the 2017-2018 Broadway season. But unlike the short, overnight stay depicted in the musical, this band has visited the Barrymore Theatre and they are here to stay. (plus)

Commentaire: Tony-winning drama Six Degrees of Separation is revived on Broadway in 2017, with acting royalty Allison Janney and John Benjamin Hickey leading the cast. Inspired by the true story of con man David Hampton, Six Degrees begins with a young man turning up on the doorstep of a wealthy Manhattan couple, bleeding from a knife wound and claiming to be the son of Sidney Poitier. Endlessly charismatic, he insinuates himself into their lives, and brings on something of a spiritual awakening in the couple, before events take an unexpected turn. (plus)
Presse: "That dangerous young man who calls himself Paul Poitier has grown up in the 27 years since he first set foot on a New York stage. All right, perhaps not “grown up,” since we’re still talking about a narcissistic con artist of adolescent fecklessness and zero self-knowledge. But there’s no doubt that he has grown in stature and, in a paradoxical way, truthfulness. This is because Paul Poitier (not his real name) has been embodied with tremulous, searching sensitivity by the screen actor Corey Hawkins in the earthbound revival of John Guare’s marvelous “Six Degrees of Separation.”" Ben Brantley for New York Times
"Broadway’s crazy good revival of “Six Degrees of Separation” is proof of theater’s enduring impact... Director Trip Cullman’s energizing revival delivers its own thrills — and one tiny nit to pick. It’s time for a moratorium on actors jumping on furniture to make a point. Besides Tom Cruise, no one does that. It feels like a con in an otherwise exhilarating, real-deal staging." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News
"Trip Cullman directs with great panache on an evocatively shadowy, morphing set by Mark Wendland. The cumulative effect, once you get over the retro vibe, is renewed respect for a disquieting, still-rewarding work." David Cote for Time Out New York
"Trip Cullman's razor-sharp staging of Six Degrees of Separation serves as a welcome reminder of the fiercely intelligent, pungently funny voice of playwright John Guare at his vintage best." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter
"Despite the vitalizing presence of Allison Janney in director Trip Cullman’s elegant revival, “Six Degrees of Separation” lacks the comic bite of the original production." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Presse: Les critiques sont excellentes:
"Be prepared to have all your emotional and sensory buttons pushed, including a few you may have not known existed." Ben Brantley for New York Times
"Director Marianne Elliott...proves a master at orchestrating visceral and wildly energetic scenes as well as poignant hushed moments." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News
"What makes the production — which features a new American cast — truly memorable is how well it balances formal brilliance and emotion. This is the whole package, a rare case of family entertainment that speaks to the heart and brain." Elisabeth Vincentelli for New York Post
"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time...is an often transfixing marvel of theatrical invention." Robert Feldberg for The Record
"It is one extremely cool event for the rising generation to experience as well as their elders." Michael Sommers for Newsroom Jersey
"Elliott and her design team have put together a remarkable production. Its virtuoso stagecraft can occasionally be distancing, even exhausting, and the play is not without its moments of manipulative sentimentality. But more than anything, The Curious Incident is a tremendously exciting demonstration of the power of theater. It makes us want to reconsider the world around us, without missing a single one of its infinite details." David Rooney for The Hollywood Reporter
"The National Theatre production of 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time' is spectacular, like Cirque du Soleil with brains." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaire: The Shakespearean tragedy in the mind of a lone patient in a clinical room deep within a psych ward. Driven by ambition, Macbeth's struggle for the crown takes him from war hero to base murderer. As madness descends his fated journey unravels with bloody consequences.
The action is set in a clinical room deep within a dark psychiatric hospital. Cumming is the lone patient, reliving the infamous story and inhabiting each role himself. Closed circuit television cameras watch the patient's every move as the walls of the psychiatric ward come to life in a visually stunning multi-media theatrical experience of Shakespeare's notorious tale of desire, ambition and the supernatural. As the play opens, the harsh lighting snaps on to reveal a man looking dazed and disoriented as two nurses remove his disheveled clothing and help him into hospital garb. His clothes are sealed into brown paper bags with the ominous word “evidence” stamped upon them. His demeanor is meek and subservient, but bloody slash marks on his pale flesh suggest that this fellow has perpetrated (or been the victim of) some bloody deeds that have left his mind shattered and prey to tormenting fantasies. “When shall we three meet again?” he asks in a tone of frightened urgency as his stoic caretakers depart. This, the first line of the play’s text, spoken by one of the witches, unleashes the dark fury of Shakespeare’s tragedy, as one by one the characters take possession of this disturbed fellow, who flits manically around the green-tiled room as he snaps from one persona to the next, suggesting a swarm of bats let loose in a confined space… (plus)
Presse: "Cumming’s Macbeth never acquires the weighty, antiheroic stature that he should." Charles Isherwood for New York Times
"A case of diminishing returns. The concept becomes less interesting as it goes on." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News
"A star vehicle driving in circles." Elisabeth Vincentelli for New York Post
"Acting students and fans of daring, scary theater are urged to get a ticket before they are all snatched up." Erik Haagensen for Back Stage
"Edges close to being a stunt — a highly artistic one, but still a stunt." Robert Feldberg for The Record
"Other than providing a tour-de-force challenge for an actor, however, the point of this production escapes me. It sheds no fresh light on the drama." Michael Sommers for Newsroom Jersey
"This radical staging - skewed as it is - offers fresh stimulation." David Rooney for The Hollywood Reporter
