Commentaire: The 50th Anniversary production of Mart Crowley's groundbreaking 1968 play The Boys in the Band also marks its Broadway premiere and plays a strictly limited 15-week engagement at the Booth Theatre.
The comic-drama originally premiered off-Broadway at the Playwrights' Unit in April 1968. After an initial intended run of just five performances, The Boys in the Band quickly gained a cult following, transferred to Theater Four on West 55th Street and ran for over 1,000 performances. Celebrity patrons during that period included the likes of Jackie Kennedy, Marlene Dietrich, Rudolf Nureyev, and Groucho Marx. The entire original off-Broadway cast also performed the play to great acclaim in London and were immortalised in William Friedkin's 1970 film adaptation.
Now, five openly gay producers have assembled an openly gay director and nine openly gay actors to mount a star-studded revival on the Great White Way and fifty years on, the piece shows us in equal measures just how far we have come and how, in other respects, nothing has changed at all. The play, of course, predates Stonewall and the AIDS epidemic and concentrates on the themes of self-loathing and homophobia. "Show me a happy homosexual, and I'll show you a gay corpse," suggests Michael, our host and the central character of the piece. Sadly in many parts of the country and of the world, this statement still rings heartwrenchingly true and fifty years later, despite tremendous political advancements and achievements, the sociological perspective remains partially as stagnant as ever.
Whilst some of Mr. Crowley's references may seem dated to younger audience members, there are many moments in The Boys in the Band that lead you to think it could have been written yesterday. The themes of racial identity still linger uncomfortably in the air in 2018, for example, whilst notions of monogamy and infidelity in the gay community are still widely topical. The play unapologetically depicts gay lifestyle and gay friendships, warts and all, and whilst the bitchiness and flamboyance of characters like Michael and Emory provide ample opportunities for laughs, the cast does an astonishing job of evoking the overwhelming sadness and loneliness at their core. What begins as formulaic as a sit-com eventually uses devices to expose the souls, torments and desires of our players to devastating effect.
David Zinn's slick scenic design of Michael's NYC apartment resembles a crimson glass house and should the inhabitants decide to start throwing stones, the whole fragile place would shatter and collapse around them... A fantastic metaphor for a striking and essential revival. (plus)

13) Meteor Shower (Original)
Joué durant 1 mois 3 semaines
Nb de preview: 31 previews
Nb de représentations: 61 représentations
Première preview: 01 November 2017 Première: 29 November 2017 Dernière: 21 January 2018
Compositeur: *** Divers • Parolier: *** Divers • Libettiste: *** Divers • Metteur en scène: Jerry Zaks • Chorégraphe: Avec: Amy Schumer (as Corky), Laura Benanti (as Laura), Keegan-Michael Key (as Gerald), and Jeremy Shamos (as Norm)
Commentaire: Emmy Award winner - and one of the world's top comedians - Amy Schumer is making her Broadway debut this fall as she stars in Hollywood legend and Tony Award nominee Steve Martin's new comedy Meteor Shower! The limited engagement plays Broadway's Booth Theatre from November 1, 2017, through to January 21, 2018, with an official opening set for November 29.
Ms. Schumer is joined on stage by a cast of stage and screen veterans including Tony Award winner Laura Benanti, Emmy Award winner Keegan-Michael Key and Tony Award nominee Jeremy Shamos, for the comedy that promises to have a meteoric impact on the Broadway season!
There aren't many ultra-modern, absurdist comedies floating around the Great White Way at all, so Meteor Shower is really in its own lane in terms of theatrical genres. Steve Martin's script imagines various scenarios that are played out over the course of one evening in California, with outcomes that vary from the trivial to the outlandish. As Gerald (Key) and Laura (Benanti) come over for an evening soirée to gaze at the meteor shower overhead with Norman (Shamos) and Corky (Schumer) at their house in Ojai, it's clear from the get-go that this encounter is going to be nothing short of explosive. May the mind games (and the lashings of physical comedy) ensue...
The four actors of the piece are perfectly cast and each shines as one-by-one they prove their comedy chops. Although Ms. Schumer is undoubtedly the driving force at the box office, these four are equally equipped on the stage and share equal portions of the laughter.
Are these home-wrecking intruders real? Are they just personifications of Norman and Corky's consciences? And how exactly do you create a man with a steaming hole in his chest after a meteor collision on stage? These and so many more questions can be answered with a trip to Meteor Shower at the Booth Theatre on Broadway! (plus)
Presse: I wish I had more to say, but I’ll admit that I am at a loss for words after seeing Meteor Shower, Steve Martin’s absurd new comedy at the Booth Theatre. What does one say about an entertainment this lightweight, this pointless, this short? - NY Theatre Guide

Commentaire: The Broadway debut of author Joshua Harmon will be complemented by the Broadway debut of rising young director Trip Cullman, who guided the play to its successful off-Broadway engagement. Significant Other was a NY Times Critic’s Pick when it premiered last summer at Roundabout Theatre Company. Charles Isherwood, writing in the New York Times, called it “an entirely delightful new play, as richly funny as it is ultimately heart-stirring.” Time Out (Adam Feldman) agreed, noting “as funny as Harmon’s breakthrough play Bad Jews, Significant Other is a timely, well-observed, sharp but bittersweet New York comedy; the play’s main assets are the keenness of the writing, studded with wry one-liners, and the humanity of the performances.” The New York Observer (Rex Reed) declared: “Significant Other is for everyone looking for a timeshare in the space we all occupy when life moves faster than we do. A wonderful play about unrequited love, offered with warmth and without sentimentality. I doubt if there is anyone who is unable to relate profoundly to the characters in this play and what they go through.” The Hollywood Reporter (David Rooney) summed it up as follows: “A funny-sad, vibrantly contemporary lonely-heart portrait.” Significant Other began at Roundabout Theatre Company following the professional debut and world premiere of Joshua Harmon's play Bad Jews at Roundabout Underground’s Black Box in fall 2012.
