Commentaire: Incorporating some two dozen ABBA songs, this had a workable and funny plot-line, inspired by Willy Russell’s “Shirley Valentine” and a Gina Lollobrigida film called “Buona Sera, Mrs Campbell”. Mamma Mia” was camp, fast-moving, great fun and a big hit with the critics and public alike. (It was a Broadway hit in 2001, and in 2008 became a successful film, with Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan).

Presse: NICHOLAS DE JONGH of the EVENING STANDARD says, "Thank you for the music…shame about the musical".

BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE of THE TIMES says, " With so much fun in the theatrical air, the rest of us might as well indulge them."

SHERIDEN MORLEY on TELETEXT really enjoyed the show saying, "After a shaky start, Mamma Mia soars" and goes on to say, "It's a genuinely touching and comic book allied to some of the greatest and most theatrical pop songs ever written."

KATE BASSETT of THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Unfortunately, Johnson's dialogue often sounds like a banal soap opera" and goes onto say, "The cast are clearly having a hoot, almost raising their eyebrows when they have to break into lyrics that are barely relevant."

THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "You shouldn't take Mamma Mia! seriously: which is precisely why it proves to be one of the few good musicals on the London stage today."

Commentaire: Following the original London production at the Bridewell, Sondheim permitted an off-Broadway staging which ran for 45 performances in Feb/March 2000. For the Broadway version Sondheim incorporated two new song/scenes, "Delighted, I'm Sure" and "Montana Chem", did some revisions to the original book, and some new musical arrangements by Jonathan Tunick. This London revival was the UK premiere of the revised off-Broadway score. After a month at the Jermyn Street Theatre it transferred to the Arts Theatre for a further three weeks.

Commentaire: This turned out to be much more than a jukebox musical, and was superbly directed as a kind of show-business documentary saga moving across the decades and also providing concert-style performance interludes of some of the best-loved songs of the era. It opened on Broadway in November 2005 and won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The London production was re-created by the New York team, and won an Olivier as the Best New Musical of 2008.

Presse: NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Slickly animated production." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Keeps us waiting through about 40 minutes of bewilderingly detailed background about the genesis of the group before treating us to an elating blast of 'Sherry', their first big hit...The book by Woody Allen collaborator, Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice has a terse, savvy wit." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "It has a quality you rarely find in musicals - gritty honesty - as well as the best collection of pop hits since Mamma Mia!...Jersey Boys superbly captures the thrills and tensions of four testosterone-charged young men discovering fame and fortune after years of dogged failure." PAUL VALE for THE STAGE says, "This piece remains very much a jukebox musical." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "It has the character, the narrative interest and the sense of place – as the backcloth indicates, the industrial badlands west of the Hudson River – to rise way above its genre." LYN GARDNER for THE GUARDIAN says, "A pleasant, forgettable night out; no more, no less."

Presse: MICHAEL BILLINGTON du THE GUARDIAN: "It had delighted me sufficiently...Much of the show's charm lies in the easy interaction of people and puppets...There is more wit than whimsy in the delightful Lopez-Marx numbers."
PAUL TAYLOR du THE INDEPENDENT: "What's appealing about the piece and Jason Moore's bouncy, enjoyable production is the total absence of jaded cynicism. What's less attractive is the lack of real bite...Avenue Q is about as genuinely subversive as Friends...All the same, I found it, intermittently, a lot of fun."
DOMINIC CAVENDISH du THE DAILY TELEGRAPH; "Light-weight affair."
BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE du THE TIMES: "There’s something almost refreshing in several of the jaunty-sounding songs."
NICK CURTIS du THE EVENING STANDARD: "Avenue Q's puppets tell racist jokes, screw around, download porn and generally get depressed by their crappy lives...very well executed and sporadically hilarious "
BRIAN LOGAN du TIME OUT: "Very easy to enjoy."
LISA MARTLAND du THE STAGE: "Clever and saucy libretto...Within an extraordinarily talented ensemble Julie Atherton and Jon Robyns are quite brilliant in creating these puppet personalities."
SUSANNAH CLAP du THE OBSERVER: "It's a little bit smart , fairly shrewd and self-parodying , constantly perky, sometimes funny and basically mushy."

Commentaire: This touring production was as near as possible a complete re-creation of the original version from 40 years earlier - with some added significance in that Jerome Robbins had died a few months prior to its revival. Several critics felt the magnificent show had a whiff of mothballs about it, and needed a completely new approach (like the current “Oklahoma” at the National Theatre.) The “dream ballet” was especially felt to be very dated, and the finger-clicking routines seemed over-choreographed and lacking spontaneity for today’s audiences.) However, others felt it held up extremely well and everyone agreed it remained one of the most brilliant scores in musical theatre. It ran for fifteen weeks at the Prince Edward and then transferred to the Prince of Wales for another year, closing January 8th 2000.

Commentaire: This was a completely revised version of “Jeeves”, the 1975 flop, re-titled “By Jeeves”. Instead of the large-scale original, the new version was a small-scale play with songs. Ayckbourn had thrown out the aunts and the pigs and all the other eccentric stuff and created an entirely new plot: Bertie intends to play his banjo at a charity performance at the local village hall but Jeeves hides the offending instrument. Andrew Lloyd Webber came up with eight new songs with five songs retained from the original. This time it was a success, described as “one of the slickest comebacks since Lazarus”. However, it still only managed just over a six month run:

Commentaire: This show held the record as the longest running all-black off-Broadway show, running for eight years, playing to over 3 million people and taking something like £38 million at the box office in stagings through Europe, Asia and Japan. The part of Doris Troy’s mother was played by Doris Troy herself, and the company included a 15 voice gospel choir. Generally the critics hated it! “Over-amplified, over-long, under-written, uninspired” (Sunday Express), “you end up aching for Motown and wishing the show had been about Diana Ross. Or even Jonathan Ross” (Michael Coveney in “The Observer”.)  (plus)

The show involved audience participation, with the audience invited to join a conga line through the auditorium during the intervals and out into the street after the show. Its Broadway production in 1990 ran for just 225 performances.
It was originally conceived by Laurie Mansfield and Paul Elliot with support from Paul McCartney (who owned the copyrights to Buddy Holly's music) Paul McCartney objected to many inaccuracies in 1978 film version of Buddy Holly’s life and was happy to support a show which told a truer story.  (plus)

Commentaire: After 19 years at the Palace Theatre the production was moved to the smaller Queen’s Theatre (the Palace needed considerable renovation to meet safety standards). In order to fit into the new space the scenery was reduced in size and the physical production needed shrinking. The most controversial aspect of the move was the size of the orchestra. The Palace pit accommodated 21 musicians, but the Queen’s could only hold 11. The rest of the sound was provided by a computer. The Musicians Union threatened a strike, but capitulated when Cameron Mackintosh claimed the only alternative was to close the show. The critics generally agreed that the “reduced” version had suffered no loss of richness or texture, and the new orchestral sound was perfectly satisfactory thanks to the new-fangled “Sinfonia” computer. Having now been seen by more than 50 million people in 38 countries and 21 languages, “Les Mis” had now become the most successful musical of all time.  (plus)

Presse: "This is British farce at its best. Fast, furious, daft and very funny. Don't try to work out the complications of the plot, just admire the superb comedy timing of Richard Briers and Bernard Cribbins. Briers plays taxi driver John Smith. He has two wives who live five miles apart, so he maintains a frantic shift system which enables him to divide his time equally between the two. Smith's bigamous life starts to fall apart when he is mistakenly hailed in the Press as a hero after a mugging incident. Trying to convince the police and his wives that there are really two taxi drivers called John Smith, has him dashing between his two homes concocting a spiral of lies. Bernard Cribbins is the innocent neighbour hauled in to bolster Smith's tall stories. Carol Hawkins and Helen Gill are the wives. If Briers manages to steer clear of stomach trouble — he eats a page of a newspaper a night — this farce could gallop on for years." The Daily Mirror

Commentaire: Se crée puis se joue à l'Adelphi Theatre à partir du 20 décembre 1935
Transféré au Prince's Theatre (Shaftesbury actuel) à partir du 13 janvier 1936.

Carl Tucker (the composer) was heavily promoted as being “from Vienna”, and the leading lady, Rosalinde Fuller, a well known classical actress, was promoted as having begun her career at the Folies Bergère. It was this mish-mash of musical styles that made the show heavy-going - dance sequences such as “South Sea Idyll” and a Valse Scena, acrobats and a mouth-organ speciality didn’t really fit alongside its romantic story. It ran its contracted month at the Adelphi and then transferred for a further six weeks at the Prince’s Theatre (Shaftesbury) - but never really caught on. (When Rosalinde Fuller died in 1982, aged 90, it was discovered that she had had an affair in 1920 with the author F.Scott Fitzgerald and was the inspiration for the chorus girl character in his novel “Head and Shoulders”)  (plus)
