Le monde des musicals

"Mr. Wix of Wickham", était un import britannique à Broadway: il avait été joué au Borough Theatre, à Londres, en 1902. Le livret et les paroles étaient de Herbert Darnley, la musique de George Darnley. Pour la présentation à New York, le livret et les chansons on été fortement révisés par John H. Wagner. Les nouvelles paroles étaient de Wagner, Andros Hawley et Jerome Kern, et la musique était de Kern, Darnley, Hawley, Max C. Eugene aka Max Dreyfus, Edward E. Rice, et Waller (prénom inconnu). Il semble que la musique de Seddon et Tours n’ait pas été retenue pour l’adaptation américaine.

La presse a donné des avis généralement négatifs ou indifférents pour ce musical et il n'a tenu l'affiche que cinq semaines, mais il marque une étape dans l’histoire du théâtre musical américain parce qu’il représente la première partition de Jerome Kern à Broadway: il a contribué à 12 des 24 chansons de la production américaine.
