Stepping Stones est le premier de deux musicals de Jerome Kern à être produit au cours de la saison 1923-24, suivi par Sitting Pretty (). Ce spectacle était un véhicule pour Fred Stone, sa femme Allene (Crater) Stone, et leur fille Dorothy Stone. Ce «musical familial» s'est joué tout au long de la saison pour une série rentable de 241 représentations au Globe Theatre. Il a ensuite entrepris un long US Tour avant de revenir brièvement au Globe de Broadway le 1 septembre 1924 pour une quarantaine de représentations supplémentaires.

L’intrigue est essentiellement une version «comédie musicale» des aventures de Roughette Hood (i.e. Little Red Riding Hood) (Dorothy Stone) avec le méchant Otto DeWolfe (Oscar Ragland). Elle est sauvée du méchant en chanson-danse-acrobatie par Peter Plug (Fred Stone), garçon de course et plombier sauvage de la pampa!

Gerald Boardman souligne que: "Most critics devoted their opening paragraphs to extolling the seventeen-year-old Dorothy Stone. . . . [Fred] Stone’s clowning and acrobatics were applauded (he parachuted down for his first entrance), and Dillingham’s lavish, tasteful hand was complimented as well. . . . In the Herald Alexander Woollcott reported that the evening was ‘abrim with sweet melodies by Jerome Kern ... ”
