Iqbal Khan’s compellingly fresh production casts at its heart two black actors. Lucian Msamati’s charming, charismatic Iago sets out to destroy Hugh Quarshie’s restrained and anti-heroic Othello out of an inexplicable hatred that cannot easily be categorised as racism. Msamati’s portrayal is upbeat. He seems desperate to be liked, even punctuating Roderigo’s speech to Brabanzio about Desdemona’s elopement with the occasional “boom, boom”.

But the statue is flawed: Shakespeare gives him one fissure. The fissure cracks and the statue breaks. He is too jealous: the fault is self-deception. He’s the greatest exponent of self-deception there’s ever been. "
Les débuts à Londres d'Andrew Cruickshank.Presse : "The two pervasive attributes Paul Robeson brought to his role were “tranquil dignity and a melancholy infinitely sad,” while Peggy Ashcroft was “a little less interesting than Desdemona should be” (Times).
“Paul Robeson understands completely and superbly the personality of Othello” (Nation).
“Vastly significant passages are cut from the text, in favour of totally unnecessary diversions in the way of dancing, trumpeting, decoration and noisy changes of scene” (Spectator).

The film version still holds the record for the most Oscar nominations for acting ever given to a Shakespeare film – Olivier, Finlay, Maggie Smith (as Desdemona) and Joyce Redman (as Emilia, Iago's wife) were all nominated for Academy Awards. Olivier was among the last white actors to be greatly acclaimed as Othello, although the role continued to be played by such performers as Donald Sinden at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1979-1980, Paul Scofield at the Royal National Theatre in 1980, Anthony Hopkins in the BBC Shakespeare television production on videotape. Paul Taylor for The Independent
"It’s a gripping production of a tragedy that is also an intensely painful psychological thriller, and though the production lasts more than three hours, it never loosens its dramatic hold. This Othello has all the hallmarks of Hytner at his best - it’s witty, agile, lucid and deeply felt...Any production of Othello stands or falls with the actors playing Othello and Iago, and the double-act between Lester’s Moor and Rory Kinnear’s Iago proves exceptional. " Charles Spencer for Daily Telegraph
"Everything about the production is clear, clever and comprehensible. But, partly because it denies Othello something of his musical grandeur and makes Iago's diseased mind the main event, I'd say it scores a successful victory on points without delivering the final, knockout blow." Michael Billington for The Guardian
"Though it lasts well over three hours, Sir Nicholas Hytner’s inventive Othello zips along." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail
"Adrian Lester is a charismatic, dignified Othello... a reminder, as if we needed one, of his great quality as a Shakespearean actor. Rory Kinnear is mesmerising as Iago...The modern setting reveals the play’s paranoid mood and uncomfortable humour but muffles the tragedy a little. Still, this is a distinguished, lucid production. " Henry Hitchings for The Evening Stanadard

As the Turkish threat gathers and Venetian forces are despatched to Cyprus, the love Othello holds for his new wife becomes a raging, uncontrollable torrent. Iago, a junior officer secretly enraged by Othello, exploits his General’s ambiguous position and ingenuous nature, driving him into a passionate and overpowering jealousy.
Othello is an all too human story; marked by the domestic intimacy of a chamber piece, it has the feel of a relentless Greek tragedy.
The wasteland of death may be both Iago’s goal and his harvest, but the stage belongs to Othello, a man who loved perhaps unwisely and too well.

Phil Willmott's new interpretation of Shakespeare's classic thriller of jealousy, illicit passion and racial tension is set during the British Raj and commemorates the centenary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre (also known as the Amritsar massacre).
One of the most infamous and shameful incidents of Britain's colonial rule of India, this atrocity saw British & Indian officers fire into a gathering of unarmed local protesters. The resulting international and local condemnation was a major factor in the ensuing deterioration of British authority in India leading to the eventual collapse of the Raj. The British had recently instigated a disastrous scheme whereby selected Indian soldiers were to be promoted into higher officer ranks in the British Army. These Indian cadets were sent to study in Great Britain at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, in anticipation of promotion to King's Commissioned Officers, with full authority over British troops. However, far from home, at Sandhurst these Indian recruits were pitted against upper-class Englishmen and mercilessly bullied in conditions alien to their upbringing and experience. Of the first batch of 25 cadets admitted ten failed to meet the requisite standard, two died, two resigned, and one was deprived of his commission. This adaptation presumes that English Army Chaplain, Cassio, and the Indian Officer recruit, Othello, survived their Sandhurst training together, becoming friends, during which time they first met Desdemona. Upon graduation Othello has been fast tracked to the rank of General in an Indian outpost, now under the jurisdiction of Desdemona's father, The Duke. She and Othello secretly marry and he sends for his old friend, Cassio to be his Lieutenant. Iago, Othello's sociopathic English Orderly (a soldier assigned to a commissioned officer as a personal servant), is prevented from raising any higher in the army by his lower-class background and is deeply resentful of Othello. With the reluctant participation of his newly arrived wife, Emilia, Iago plots the destruction of the Indian General, who is already isolated and conflicted by his role collaborating in and enforcing the British occupancy of his native land. This production is running as part of Phil Willmott's 4th Essential Classics Season at the Union Theatre.
