Initially savaged by the US critics, the show nevertheless survived and eventually triumphed, going on to run for more than two years and garnering six Tony nominations.

It is the miracle of Broadway. Six months after Bill Kenwright opened in New York to notices which should have guaranteed the show's closure within a week, the musical has now played 270 performances to 270 standing ovations and is taking more than £200,000 per week.
Even New York Times critic Frank Rich, whose review read like the kiss of death at the first night party, has moved to hold up Kenwright publicity as a heroic model of positive theatrical production.
And the woman at the centre of the continuing excitement on West 45th Street is our own Petula Clark. It was when she and pop star turned-actor David Cassidy took over the leading roles that the turnaround happened.
Ms Clark may be almost over-familiar here from her early days as a child actress and squeaky clean songstress, but in America she is regarded as a sophisticated star. Songs like Downtown and Don't Sleep In The Subway also spoke directly to US audiences.
"I've been asked to do Broadway musicals before, I've even been asked to choose my own show, which was very flattering."
She admits she very nearly did not make the trip with Blood Brothers . "I'd seen it in London. I liked it a lot but it's very Liverpool and that's not me. When I read about the reviews in New York I thought it was such a pity.
"The Bill asked me to come and do it. I said No right away. There seemed little chance of the show surviving. But my husband said perhaps Bill knew something I didn't know, like the word-of-mouth that was going around, so I started to think again." The happy ending has almost wiped out the pain she suffered with the West End failure three years ago of a musical she wrote herself, Someone Like You. "That really hurt but you have to put these things behind you. I learned one big lesson - not to compromise. Little by little I allowed it to slip away from me. Next time I'll know better and say my way is the right way. Just like Bill."
-London Evening Standard 1995
"'Blood Brothers' wipes me away, without fail, every time. Petula Clark is in thrilling vocal form. David Cassidy is a gutsy revelation."
-New York Newsday
"'Blood Brothers' is better than ever with David Cassidy and the incomparable Petula Clark. A Perfect marriage of performers and the parts they play."
-Associated Press
"One of the best. A musical of gripping, chilling power."
-The Newhouse News Service
updated version of the 1844 novella The Corsican Brothers by Alexandre Dumas, père
1981: Play)
Commissioned by Paul Harman's Merseyside Young People's Theatre Company for Secondary school children. First performed at Fazakerley Comprehensive, Liverpool in November 1981.
The BBC filmed the first rehearsal of Blood Brothers with the Merseyside Young People's Theatre Company and with Willy Russell in attendance making changes to the script. The film followed the young actors through to the very first performance at Fazakerley Comprehensive School and was later shown as part of BBC schools Education programming.
1982: From Play to Musical
Willy spent the whole of 1982 turning the small scale production of Blood Brothers into a full scale musical. Revising the book, writing the lyrics and composing all the music himself.
1983: Liverpool & London 1
He then developed the musical for a production at the Liverpool Playhouse, in 1983, starring Barbara Dickson and Andrew C. Wadsworth. Produced in association with Bob Swash Ltd and directed by Chris Bond. From it's hugely successful Liverpool production it transferred to the Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, London, where it became the musical hit of the season, winning three awards for its author/composer and one for its leading actress/singer Barbara Dickson.
1987: UK Tour
Blood Brothers had a year-long national tour beginning in 1987, produced by Bill Kenwright (and directed by Kenwright and Bob Tomson).
1988: London 2
This tour was leading to a revival at the Albery Theatre, opening on 28 July 1988 and closing on 16 November 1991. The original cast included Con O'Neill, who, as Mickey, won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in 1989.
1991: transfert to London 3
The musical transferred to the Phoenix Theatre on 21 November 1991, where it is still running.

En fait, le bouche à oreille s'était amorcé, mais il était trop tard, le théâtre avait ét loué pour un nouveau spectacle.
Originally produced at the Liverpool Playhouse in January, for an eleven week run, this was based on Dion Boucicault’s 19th Century melodrama “The Corsican Brothers”. This version had an excellent reception for the outstanding performance by Barbara Dickson and the much-praised performances of Andrew C. Wadsworth and George Costigan. However, a few critics thought the characters were too black-and-white : the poor family and the posh family were rather obvious stereotypes, and the social comment was a bit heavy-handed and unsubtle. Notwithstanding, the show had a successful run and was recognised as something rather special, winning the Best New Musical of the Year Award. Five years after its first West End run it was revised and re-produced by Bill Kenwright in 1988 and was an outstanding, triumphant success, becoming one of the longest-running musicals of the 20th Century.
