Chorégraphie : Ann Yee
Producteur :
Avec : Steve Pemberton (Vice Principal Douglas Panch), Chris Carswell (Leaf Coneybear/Carl Dad), David Fynn (William Barfee), Hayley Gallivan (Olive Ostrovsky), Harry Hepple (Chip Tolentino/Jesus), Katherine Kingsley (Rona Lisa Perretti/ Olive's Mum), Maria Lawson (Marcy Park), Ako Mitchell (Mitch Mahoney/Dan Dad/Olive's Dad), Iris Roberts (Logainne Schwatzandgrubenniere)
Commentaires : An unusual aspect of the show is that four real audience members are invited on stage to compete in the spelling bee alongside the six young characters. Despite its success in the USA, most London critics were not impressed.
Presse : "Given the Donmar's exemplary musical track record, it is a bit of a shock to find them importing this flimsy, vacuous diversion...the highly forgettable songs seem to be imposed on the action rather than arising organically from it and many of the jokes are just as arbitrary."
Michael Billington for The Guardian

"An endearing small-scale musical."
Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

"This show is excellent."
Ian Shuttleworth for The Financial Times

"A one-joke show that’s slightly over-extended and too frequently repeated. But it’s also bright, polished and fun ."
Mark Shenton for The Stage

"Director Jamie Lloyd’s decision to stage this glib, candy-floss confection seems unfathomable... most of the characters are little more than glib stereotypes and the show’s mixture of satire and insufferable whimsy struck me as nauseating."
Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

Presse : "Amid a terrific ensemble, Catherine Tate adds welcome levity as the spaced-out Sara Jane Moore...The diminutive Andy Nyman twinkles with mischief as the irrepressible Guiteau...and as Samuel Byck...Mike McShane strikes the perfect anti-festive note of crabby, scary discontent, a quite unforgettable sight in his soiled Santa outfit." Dominic Cavendish for The Telegraph

"This revival, played without an interval, is fleet, but Sondheim’s revue format can feel scrappy, and necessarily often lacks depth; not all characters convince or are fully explored. But this is crackling production is certainly more hit than miss." Holly Williams for The Independent

"In Lloyd’s interpretation, on a set by Soutra Gilmour that resembles the fairground in a horror film, it feels thrilling." Henry Hitchings for the Evening Standard

"Jamie Parker sings soulfully as the Balladeer; Aaron Tveit makes an indignant, composed Booth. This being the Menier, the show is staged with elan and the music is tightly played." Quentin Letts for the Daily Mail

Presse : "The biggest compliment I can pay Jamie Lloyd’s production is to say that it really has got soul. It’s memorably gritty at times (the swear-word count is exceptionally high) and also proves wonderfully funny and touching."
Charles Spencer for Daily Telegraph

"If only Doyle – who adapted his own book – and director Jamie Lloyd had tried to give things some semblance of plot, still more some properly defined characters, they might have broken the jukebox-musical mould. Instead, this show simply buys into a form that has delivered big profits in the West End, and probably will here, too. "
Lyn Gardner for The Guardian

" It offers a pumpy night out full of noisy tunes played by a musically competent cast.I found it all faintly exhausting and blunt. Go to this show if you want lots of music and swearing. Do not go if you want insights or variety of tone and pace."
Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail

"The evening is much more successful as a staggered gig than as drama."
Paul Taylor for The Independent

"Has plenty of pace and energy."
Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

Commentaires : Part of Trafalgar Transformed - 'a season of politically-charged power plays on the doorstep of Whitehall, accompanied by a festival of platform events, discussions and readings.'
Jamie Lloyd's production will see Shakespeare's darkest tale play out in a dystopian Scotland brutalised by war. Under a toxic fog, Macbeth begins his tormented struggle for power fuelled by ambition and paranoia.
Presse : "Lloyd’s production, set in a post-apocalyptic Scotland which has been laid waste by war and climate change, packs a powerful punch...James McAvoy, best known as a film actor, proves a commanding Macbeth...This is a gripping and genuinely startling production - and would be more effective still with a speedier running time. " Charles Spencer for Daily Telegraph

" [James McAvoy] a gripping, no-holds-barred performance...For my taste, the production is a wee bit over-the-top but there are sequences where it achieves an extraordinary thematic penetration. " Paul Taylor for The Independent

"I’ve seen the role [Macbeth] played with more poetic subtlety but never with more energy." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

"Although it's a good occasion, there's a relentlessly visceral quality to Lloyd's production that eventually becomes a bit wearing." Michael Billington for The Guardian

Passion (2010-09-Donmar Warehouse-London)

Durée : 2 mois 2 semaines

Chorégraphie :
Producteur :
Avec : David Thaxton (Giorgio), Elena Roger ( Fosca), Scarlett Strallen ( Clara ), David Birrell (Colonel Ricci), Allan Corduner (Doctor Tambourri), Simon Bailey, Haydn Oakley, Ross Dawes, Tim Morgan, Iwan Lewis.
Commentaires : This revival, part of Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday celebrations, received almost unanimous critical praise and won the Evening Standard Best Musical Award, while David Thaxton won the Olivier Award for the Best Actor in a Musical. Elena Roger’s outstandingly moving performance missed out on the Best Actress in a Musical Award, which went to Sheridan Smith for “Legally Blonde” – something which caused a lot of controversy.
Presse : "...if the result is a triumph, it is because of the production's enfolding intimacy and an imaginative stroke of casting....Maybe this will never be Sondheim's most loved show; but what this production beautifully communicates is the unstoppable force of passion." Michael Billington for The Guardian
"Everything about Passion is breathtaking." Mark Shenton for The Stage
"I never thought I could love Passion, and maybe now I do." Matt Wolf for The Arts Desk
"I watched Jamie Lloyd’s superb new production in a state of rapt concentration, and at the end felt I had witnessed a masterpiece...You may either love or hate this show, but it is impossible to feel indifferent to its raw power and emotional candour." Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph
"Passion, despite its gorgeousness, feels cold. Not so much a passionate work as a consideration of what it means to be passionate, it has too narrow an emotional range. It shows Sondheim at his most operatic, but for all the gestures in the direction of Puccini there are no soaring arias to carry us aloft. The characters are unsympathetic, and the humourless storytelling results in their drama lacking real humanity." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard
"Elena Roger's Fosca is a performance to die for." Paul Callan for Daily Express
" Jamie Lloyd's Donmar revival of this rebarbative 1994 musical makes a compelling case for its power to unsettle and affront." Paul Taylor for Independent

Presse : JOHANN HARI for THE EVENING STANDARD says, " Elena Roger...has folded herself into Edith Piaf so perfectly." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Roger sings as though her lungs depend on it. Her delivery is huge and gutsy but it does not sound from the gut. Watching her in Jamie Lloyd's punchy, proscenium-arched production, I kept thinking of computer-generated images and how they annihilate any sense of real odds being overcome." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "[Elena Roger]It is a tremendous performance , buttressed by Jamie Lloyd's production which punctuates Gems's snapshot scenes with the exaggerated click of a camera shutter...if there was an instant standing ovation, it was for Roger's triumphant performance rather than the play." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Pam Gems’s 100-minute salute to the embattled life and feisty yet poignant art of Edith Piaf is sketchy, even scrappy, but then a neat, smooth play would hardly suit its defiantly unneat and unsmooth heroine. In any case, such objections dwindle to cavils, given the quality that the Argentine actress Elena Roger brings to the role of the little sparrow with the big vibrato." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "What's missing is any sense that this is a performance dragged from the actress's guts. Roger shares Piaf's diminutive stature, and she is by turns imperious, petulant, fiery and vulnerable, but I never felt as though I was being vouchsafed a glimpse into the singer's soul...Jamie Lloyd directs an efficient but curiously soulless production."

Presse : "McAvoy has tremendous, infectious fun as this charismatic holy fool, a role taken by Peter O’Toole in the 1972 film version. Eyes glinting with mischief, smiling beatifically, he takes Barnes’s luxuriantly freewheeling speeches at often breath-taking speed so that even when they jump the rails of sense, we’re still hooked." Dominic Cavendish for The Telegraph

"Lloyd’s production keeps the action flowing smoothly on Soutra Gilmour’s unitary set and, in a 14-strong cast, there are good performances from Anthony O’Donnell as a Marxist butler, Ron Cook as Jack’s vindictive uncle and Kathryn Drysdale as a false Marguerite Gautier..." Michael Billington for The Guardian

"James McAvoy returns for a second season to director Jamie Lloyd’s Trafalgar presentations. His Jack Gurney is by turns charming and even more chilling than his Macbeth here last season; his smile can charm you across a flowery meadow or make you resolve never to risk walking down a darkened alley with him." Ian Shuttleworth for The Financial Times

"James McAvoy’s charismatic performance is a tour de force." Henry Hitchings for Evening Standard

Presse : "The blunt truth is, though, that it’s not just the title that’s poorly conceived. The show suffers from a strange condition of only getting interesting right at the end...forgettable froth" Dominic Cavendish for The Telegraph

"I have, however, one crucial cavil: slick as Urinetown undoubtedly is, just as with the Book of Mormon I felt no emotional connection to the material. That’s a big problem for a big-ticket show." Fiona Mountford for The Evening Standard
