Le rôle d'Evita était un rôle très convoité. Le spectacle a été très médiatisé aux États-Unis après son monstrueux succès à Londres. Suite à ce battage médiatique, plusieurs stars ont été approchées pour le rôle-titre, dont: Barbra Streisand, Ann-Margret, Meryl Streep, Faye Dunaway et Raquel Welch.

Commentaires : Une tournée, basée sur la production originale de Broadway, qui devait initialement se jouer à Broadway durant la saison 1999-2000, a commencé à Detroit des preview le 3 novembre 1998 et fermé à Boston, Massachusetts, à l'été 1999. Cette production a mis en évidence les aspects latins du spectacle. Selon l'affiche: «Le casting de Latin fait partie de l’effort mis par cette production pour être culturellement plus authentique.»

Natalie Toro qui jouait Eva a reçu d'excellentes critiques, ainsi que les principaux rôles masculins.

Commentaires : Madeline Kahn left the show early in the run after having missed 10 performances in two months. She was replaced by her understudy, Judy Kaye. At the time, it was reported that the role was too vocally demanding for her to perform eight times a week, and that she had proposed having Judy Kaye play matinees.

Hal Prince stated in later interviews that she was having trouble commanding the energy to play physical comedy eight times a week, and his statements suggest that he and possibly the writers tried to persuade her to leave. At least a few critics, having attended critics' previews rather than opening night (when Prince says she was wonderful), did find her performance a bit lackluster.

Between the out-of-town opening and the Broadway opening, the role was made more vocally demanding. It may be that this was done at Kahn's suggestion. It does seem that after the Broadway opening, at some performances she sang lower notes in place of some of the high notes that had been added.

Commentaires : Based on the play by Christopher Bond. This Grand-Guignol semi-operatic piece is generally held to be a masterpiece and has gone on to have world-wide success. Yet this first London production failed. It was an exact copy of the Broadway version which won 8 Tony Awards and ran for 558 performances - but the London critics were scathing. They claimed the production was over-blown, swamped with heavy scenery and pretentious. (A later much simpler “chamber” version at the Cottesloe Theatre was an enormous success.)

Commentaires : This show had cost a staggering £4 million and embraced a circular stage that tilted upwards into the vertical plane, and contained batteries of lights, stroboscopes and lasers turning the whole auditorium into a “sensuround galaxy”.
The sound-system was intended to set all the seats vibrating to simulate the lift-off of a rocket into outer-space.
Laurence Olivier appeared as a hologram inside a giant floating egg which opened at various intervals to comment upon the need for Truth.
After the first year the Cliff Richard role was taken over by David Cassidy, and then later by David Ian.
The show ran for two years but failed to break even because of its huge running costs. Following a dispute between the owners of the Dominion Theatre and Dave Clarke the show suddenly closed in April 1988 even though there were advance ticket sales for the following six months. Refunds were given.
