This production boasts a beautifully crafted scenic design by Santo Loquasto that allows the audience to admire and be inspired to use their own imaginations in equal measures. He paints a picture of a bygone era that has a deliberately hazy atmosphere about it, as if being recalled from a distant memory. A 15 minute section of the Second Act was tailored to his presence, enabling him to hi-jack the show, breaking into his nutty-professor voice, tossing canes in the air and failing to catch them, telling joke after joke in his old vaudeville act, and then just as suddenly returning to the script and the plot. Jerry Lewis fans loved it. The show itself was much praised on its first return to London after some 40 years, but it ran for just over nine weeks.
An expected transfer to the Savoy Theatre from 16 October 1997 was cancelled.Presse : NICK CURTIS of the EVENING STANDARD describes the show as making “ a modest start to its London season “ and going on to describe Jerry Lewis’s performance as “ sometimes good, sometimes bad, and sometimes just plain ugly”

Set in Sheffield it was a non-musical comedy which managed to deal seriously with subjects like unemployment, father’s rights, depression, impotence, homosexuality, working-class culture and suicide. The musical version changed the setting to Buffalo, New York, but stayed very close to the film, changing some names and introducing a few new characters.
The musical opened on Broadway in October 2000 and ran for 769 performances. The London cast included six of the original Broadway cast members and received excellent notices. Dora Bryan was replaced after 12 weeks (due to “filming commitments”) by Lynda Baron, and after the agreed six months, the American leads were replaced with David Ganly (Dave), Cornell John (Noah), Ben Richards (Jerry), Paul Keating (Ethan), Samuel James (Malcolm) and Tony Timberlake (Harold). It ran for 9 months.

The play was originally called "Broadway, Broadway" and had closed during tryouts in Philadelphia in 1978. Geraldine Page and James Coco were in the Philadelphia cast, and the play was set to open on Broadway at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. However, the Philadelphia reviews were negative and the Broadway opening was cancelled.
In 1984, McNally said that after "Broadway, Broadway" closed he was no longer confident, but finally realized that having a show close is not the worst thing that could happen. For the Broadway run the play was rewritten to bring the story and references up to 2014. The role of Emma was cut and replaced by Gus, an aspiring actor employed as the party's butler.Presse : "All the cast members fulfill their raisons d’être, which is to sling a whole lot of mud in the nicest possible way. Although it was praised for its lavish staging, and received a few excellent notices, it was generally felt to be clunky and exceptionally dark and gloomy. It was rapidly nicknamed “Paint Never Dries”. Later in the year a new version was rehearsed simultaneously with the evening performances and the show closed for four days in November 2010 for substantial re-writes. It re-opened with new direction from Bill Kenwright, new choreography from Bill Deamer, and some new lyrics by Charles Hart. The London production closed on 27 August 2011 after a disappointing run of fewer than eighteen months.Presse : "There is much to enjoy in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical. The score is one of the composer's most seductive. Bob Crowley's design and Jack O'Brien's direction have a beautiful kaleidoscopic fluidity. And the performances are good.
