Commentaires : This was hugely successful at the Lyric, but was so obviously a kind of pantomime, that there was no possibility of getting it to play other than in holiday periods. Daniel and Alain Boublil were, surprisingly, not related in any way. This first involvement of Alain Boublil with Cameron Mackintosh was, of course, to prove hugely important in the future of British musicals.

Commentaires : This Chichester Festival Theatre production was generally regarded as rather lacklustre, and although Suzi Quatro (billed as “America’s First Lady of Rock”) had an appealing personality, most critics felt she made insufficient impact as the gun-toting Annie Oakley. The original London production opened at the Coliseum on June 7th 1947 and ran for 1,304 performances, and made a star of Dolores Gray in the leading role. (The 1946 New York premiere was a huge success for Ethel Merman.)

Commentaires : This is an adaptation of John Gay’s masterpiece by John Caird and the composer Ilona Sekacz, first performed at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1992. It opened at the Swan Theatre on 7th April and played in repertoire for the whole of the 1992 season. It then transferred to the Barbican Theatre in London, opening on the 7th April 1993.
This revival was very much in the “Les Miserables” style, and was described as “low life augmented by high camp”.

Commentaires : The performance on 8 November 1983 was a Special Gala Performance staged in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
Blondel was the opening performance of the newly refurbished Old Vic Theatre and was the first of that season's subscription season - an idea that the new owner, Ed Mirvish, had imported from his theatre in Toronto, Canada where he claimed that 85% of seats where sold in advance to subscribers.
Although man critics found the plot muddled and confused, the chorus of monks was a great success and the show did develop a kind of cult following. It was chosen to re-open the Old Vic after the theatre had undergone a major renovation under its new owner, the Canadian “Honest” Ed Mirvisch. It transferred to the Aldwych Theatre in January 1984.

Commentaires : The West End production ran for two years, undergoing some re-writing and changes during the course of its run. A heavily re-written version, with book additions by Thomas Meehan opened on Broadway in April 2004 and ran for eight months (284 performances). Commentaires : This production faced problems because of culture changes since 1968. References to “heroin” were removed, “Mainline” became “starlight”, and for the great sleep-in number, the whole cast produced condoms. This revival was described as a professional, efficient but dated show, compared with the original which had been a genuine expression of the spirit of the times. It closed on November 20th with losses approaching £2 million. The cast had all agreed to take significant wage cuts during the last few weeks in an attempt to keep the show afloat.

Commentaires : This was a show in two parts. The “song” half was a song-cycle called “Tell Me on a Sunday” - a simple tale of a young English woman in New York and the trials and tribulations she experiences through a series of unhappy love affairs. This was performed by Marti Webb. The second half was called “Variations”, a suite of variations on a theme by Paganini, and was interpreted in dance by Wayne Sleep and a team of eight dancers. (During the long run the Marti Webb role was taken over by Gemma Craven, Lulu and Liz Robertson. Wayne Sleep’s role was later danced by Stephen Jeffries, Graham Fletcher, John Meehan and Paul Tomkinson)

Commentaires : The show has been extensively revised since its tryout in Washington last year. A reworked, and more successful, West End production opened at the Aldwych Theatre on July 1, 1998, starring Marcus Lovett as The Man and Lottie Mayor as Swallow, running for 1044 performances and closing in January 2001. This production was darker than the Washington, D.C. production, and was revised and directed by Gale Edwards, a director who had previously collaborated with Lloyd Webber on an updated production of Jesus Christ Superstar. More than half of the crew also came from Superstar to Whistle.
Presse : NICHOLAS DE JONGH of the EVENING STANDARD was scathing saying that Lloyd Webber's musical is "so ludicrous in outline, so unmemorable in song that his admirers may tune out and turn on to something more contemporary."
