The Wizard of the Nile fut le premier grand succès de Victor Herbert dans le monde des opérettes: 105 représentations.

L'Égypte souffre d'un grand malheur. Kibosh, un magicien persan, est en tournée dans tout le pays. Il propose de faire pleuvoir le ciel, et il le fait. Mais la pluie provoque des inondations désastreuses. Le roi Ptolémée décrète que Kibosh sera scellé à l’intérieur d'une tombe, mais des courtisans enthousiastes ont également scellé par inadvertance le roi dans la tombe avec lui. Lorsqu'ils s'échappent, le roi est si heureux qu'il pardonne à Kibosh. Au même moment, Cléopâtre et son professeur de musique, Ptarmigan, vivent une histoire d'amour. Cependant, ils se séparent quand Cléopâtre attend l'arrivée de Marc Antoine.
