Louie the 14th de Sigmund Romberg était un musical conçu comme un véhicule comique pour Leon Errol, qui a rencontré un succès populaire avec plus de 300 représentations. Il s’agissait du deuxième musical de Romberg cette saison-là, mais contrairement à The Student Prince in Heidelberg, sa partition, bien que généralement bien accueillie, n’a produit aucun standard impérissable.
L’histoire se déroulait en France (ou plutôt dans une "France de comédie musicale", selon Time) juste après l’Armistice de 1919. Leon Errol y incarnait Louie Ketchup, un ancien cuisinier maladroit de l’armée américaine reconverti en guide alpin ("avec ou sans yodel", selon Burns Mantle dans le Detroit Free Press). Invité à un grand dîner organisé par Paul Trapmann (J. W. Doyle), un magnat américain du pétrole, il se retrouve pris dans un quiproquo aristocratique : Trapmann, superstitieux, refuse qu’il y ait treize convives et exige un quatorzième invité. C’est ainsi que Louie, embarqué malgré lui, se fait passer pour un noble.
Tout au long de la soirée, Errol enchaîne ses numéros comiques habituels : une scène d’ivresse, des chutes spectaculaires facilitées par ses célèbres "jambes en caoutchouc", et une scène où, chargé d’un véritable Everest de paquets, il lutte contre ses bras tremblotants avant de tout faire tomber dans un fracas burlesque.
