Commentaires : As of the 5th January, Theatre Royal Drury Lane closed its doors for 20 months for a renovation project that will restore the historic theatre to its former 1812 glory. The Theatre will re-open in September 2020 with a blockbuster show that is transferring from Broadway.

“The auditorium will be completely reconfigured into a comfortable and more intimate space. Producers will have the choice of a traditional proscenium arch or in-the-round configuration. We’re reducing the audience capacity by 200 to create wider seats, more legroom and better sightlines. The auditorium will also be reshaped to create a tighter curve, bringing the performer and audience closer together.” – Andrew Lloyd Webber

Access improvements to the building will include a new street level entrance, ramps to the stalls, 5 new accessible WCs and a 16-person passenger lift catering to all levels of the theatre. In a bid to curb bathroom waiting times for women in particular, 20 female cubicles will be installed taking the number of female WCs to x55. Led by architect Steve Tompkins, the grand cantilevered Wyatt staircases which were lost 100 years ago will be revealed to create new areas for seating and hospitality.

Upon reopening the theatre will offer facilities beyond the regular theatrical fare, creating a true destination venue in its own right. Front of house facilities will be open to the public all day and include bars, restaurants and cafes so the iconic interiors can be enjoyed by everyone not just theatregoers in the heart of Covent Garden.

Commentaires : It was the last, and least successful, of the series of twelve Aldwych farces that ran in uninterrupted succession at the Aldwych Theatre in London from 1923 to 1933.
The actor-manager Tom Walls had produced, directed and co-starred in nine Aldwych farces between 1923 and 1932. By the early 1930s his interest was moving from theatre to cinema, and though he produced the last three farces in the series he did not appear in them. Ben Travers, who had written all but three of the series, made no attempt to write Walls-type roles for another actor to play. Ralph Lynn, who had co-starred with Walls in the earlier farces, became the sole star for Dirty Work, Fifty-Fifty and A Bit of a Test.
By 1933 some regular members of the Aldwych company had left, but there remained Lynn, in his customary "silly ass" roles, Robertson Hare, as a figure of put-upon respectability; Mary Brough as a good-hearted battle-axe; and the saturnine Gordon James.
Presse : The Times thought the running battle in the second act highly effective, but found that the resolution of the plot in the last act was too slow and not comic enough.
Ivor Brown in The Observer also thought the second act the highlight: "essential, victorious Aldwych nonsense. O rare Ben Travers!"
The Manchester Guardian commented, "The Aldwych Gentlemen v. Players can hold their own even on that tricky wicket the financial state of the London theatres in 1933."

Presse : The Times commented, "It would be quite beside the point to complain that one Aldwych farce is like any other. An orange is no less succulent for resembling the orange of yesterday." At its best, in the paper's view, "this piece is funny in much the same wildly extravagant way that Mr. Wodehouse's stories are funny. The truth is that Mr. Lynn can be more like a Wodehouse figure of fun than anything Mr. Wodehouse has ever succeeded in creating for the theatre".
The Daily Mirror said that there was a laugh in every line of the piece.
In The Observer, St John Ervine thought that the cast and the author showed signs of fatigue, but he allowed that the piece was "immensely entertaining in parts". He singled out Robertson Hare for particular praise.
Ivor Brown in The Manchester Guardian thought that the script needed fine-tuning and concluded, "With time the cast will improve the play; no play could possibly improve the cast".

Commentaires : Nichols' play premiered at Citizens Theatre in Glasgow, before it transferred to the West End's Comedy Theatre, and then on to Broadway where it was nominated for the Tony Award for best play.
Subsequent revivals include two Broadway productions, and a West End revival at the Ambassadors Theatre starring Clive Owen and Victoria Hamilton. It transferred to the Comedy Theatre, where Eddie Izzard later took over the role from Owen. Izzard and Hamilton reprised their roles in a Broadway transfer of the play, as well as a TV adaptation.

Two years later Delaney received the Drama Critics' Circle Award for the plays New York City production. It was made into a notable film in 1961. A Taste of Honey was voted joint 50th of the National Theatre's top 100 plays of the millennium.

Litvinenko worked as a spy for the FSB specialising in organised crime before he was arrested on charges of 'exceeding the authority of his position', after he accused senior officials of ordering the assassination of Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky. He fled to England with his family in 2000 and was granted asylum, but in 2006, he was hospitalised and later died after being poisoned with radioactive polonium.

In 2016, Luke Harding's book A Very Expensive Poison - on which this play is based - delved into this shocking case to explore whether this could have been ordered by Russia's very highest in command.

The 2017 revival of Angels in America - A Gay Fantasia on National Themes quickly became the fastest-selling show in the history of London's National Theatre. Directed by two-time Tony Award winner Marianne Elliott, the widely praised production now transfers to New York where performances began on February 23, 2018 at the Neil Simon Theatre.

Tony Kushner's epic play made waves at its world premiere in San Francisco in 1991 and on Broadway in 1993, ultimately winning both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for "Best Play". It also went on to be adpated by HBO for television in 2003, winning the Golden Globe and Emmy Award for "Best Miniseries".

The production also marks the first-ever Broadway revival for Angels in America and features original London stars such as two-time Tony Award winner Nathan Lane and Oscar & Tony nominee Andrew Garfield. The Broadway production remains as slick and stylish as it did when it entertained full houses in London, with its stunning, often neon-infused lighting design by Paule Constable and effortlessly shifting set design by Ian MacNeil.

With stellar, frequently heart-wrenching performances by Lane as Roy Cohn, Garfield as Prior Walter and Olivier Award winner Denise Gough as Harper Pitt, backed up by a tour-de-force performance by Susan Brown as Hannah Pitt and several other characters, Angels in America may well be showered with acting trophies by the time the 2018 Awards season is over.

Set during the AIDS epidemic of the mid-1980's in New York City, the sprawling themes of Angels in America remain as urgent and as topical as ever in today's fragile social and political climate.
