Commentaires : Hugely praised as the “best new musical for years”, its music ranged from beautiful and lyrical ballads to true toe-tappers, and a rich score based on the ballads, hymns and drinking songs from the American folk tradition. Based on Maggie Greenwald’s 1993 film starring Suzy Amis, Bo Hopkins and Ian McKellen, this musical version was first staged in September 2000 at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater.

Commentaires : Premiered in New York in 1965, this ran for just 280 performances with Barbara Harris and John Cullum (replacing Louis Jordan who was dropped after the Boston tryout.) It was filmed in 1970 with Barbra Streisand and Yves Montand. This was its British premiere, and received very mixed notices.

Commentaires : Although some critics felt the show really needed a lavish set to match its operetta style, most agreed this was a delightful revival of an extremely clever, witty musical.

Version 5

Pacific Overtures (1994-04-Bridewell Theatre-London)

Type de série: Revival
Théâtre: Bridewell Theatre (Londres - Angleterre)
Durée : 3 semaines
Nombre :
Première Preview : Monday 25 April 1994

Mise en scène : Carol Metcalfe
Chorégraphie :
Producteur :
Avec : Roland Beame, Francis Crampsie, Lyanna Iveson, Thomas Monk, Rosalind Moore, Clive Paget, Tim Sawers, Victoria Simmonds, Marton York.
Commentaires : This was the second production by the resident company at the newly opened Bridewell Theatre—a converted Victoria swimming bath and laundry, just off Fleet Street. There were acoustic and spatial problems with the new venue, and the peculiar effect of the orchestra being hidden in what used to be the swimming pool and the conductor occasionally popping his head above stage for the benefit of the singers. The production chose to use a mixed cast (the original had used an all-male cast in the Japanese Kabuki traditions). It was felt
that what had been big and unwieldy on the Coliseum stage at its premiere now gained a great deal from its more intimate setting and performance space, but generally the performance and production was felt to be a bit lacklustre and unexciting.

Version 6

Passion (2004-03-Bridewell Theatre-London)

Type de série: Revival
Théâtre: Bridewell Theatre (Londres - Angleterre)
Durée : 3 semaines
Nombre :

Producteur :
Avec : Mark Carroll (Giorgio), Clare Burt (Fosca), Kate Arneil {Clara), Matthew White (Colonel Ricci), Simon Masterton (Doctor Tambourri), David Menkin, Nigel Pilkington, Christopher Jay, William Kenning, Dominic Brewer
Commentaires : This small-scale revival marked the 10th anniversary show of the Bridewell company, and received a muted welcome from the critics. However, there was much praise for Clare Burt as Fosca.

Version 7

Saturday Night (1997-12-Bridewell Theatre-Londres)

Type de série: Original
Théâtre: Bridewell Theatre (Londres - Angleterre)
Durée : 1 mois 1 semaine
Nombre : 38 représentations

Dernière : Saturday 24 January 1998

Chorégraphie :
Producteur :
Avec : Cast: Sam Newman (Gene), Anna Francolini (Helen), Jeremy David (Artie), Simon Greiff (Ray), Mark Haddigan (Hank), James Millard (Bobby), Maurice Yeoman (Dino), Tracie Bennett (Celeste), Ashleigh Sendin (Mildred), Gavin Lee (Fantasy Man / Male Vocalist / Clune), Rae Baker (Fantasy Woman / Miss Fletcher / Florence / Usherette / Dakota Doran / Female Vocalist), Paul Brereton (Police Lieutenant / Fantasy Butler)
Commentaires : This was planned for Sondheim’s Broadway debut in the early 1950s, but prior to the opening Lemuel Ayers, the producer, suddenly died from leukaemia. His widow decided to abandon the project and refused to release the rights to anyone else. The show remained unproduced for more than 40 years. In 1995 permission was granted for a group of students at Birmingham University to present a concert version, and this led to Sondheim allowing the Bridewell to stage this world premiere - a production of enormous interest to critics, performers and musical enthusiasts alike. It was well received.
