Commentaire: Based on Ossie Davies’s 1961 play “Purlie Victorious”, this opened on Broadway in March 1970, and after a quiet start became one of the big hits of the season. It ran for 688 performances and then went on tour before returning to New York for a brief run in 1972. (Gary Geld and Peter Udell would go on to further Broadway success in 1975 with “Shenandoah”.) This was its first production outside the USA, and although it would have been a trail-blazing piece at the time of the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, it was now felt to be no more than a tuneful, jolly but very dated piece of Black History. Commentaire: Originally a 1933 German play “Viktor und Viktoria” by Rheinhold Schunzel, the first English version was the 1935 Jessie Matthew film, “Just a Girl”. Blake Edwards re-made the film in 1982 with music and lyrics by Henry Mancini and Leslie Bricusse, and with his wife, Julie Andrews in the lead. In 1995 he adapted this into a Broadway musical, again starring Julie Andrews. Extra songs were needed and Mancini and Bricusse started work on the project, but sadly Mancini died, and newcomer Frank Wildhom completed the score. It opened in New York in October 1995 and ran for 734 performances. Julie Andrews was nominated for a Tony but rejected the nomination because, as she explained in a curtain speech, “However, flattered as I am, and honoured to be nominated, I have to say how deeply sad I am to be the only nominee in this extraordinarily gifted company.” However, Julie Andrews and the show received and won several other awards from the Drama Desk and Outer Circle critics. Julie Andrews stayed with the show for almost two years, during which she took a short holiday when Liza Minelli stood in. A great scandal ensued when the leading man walked out in protest at Minelli’s poor performance. When Julie Andrews finally left the show in June 1997 she was replaced with Raquel Welch, but without its legendary star, the show came off very quickly. (plus)

Commentaire: This was the third time “Rags” had been staged in London, and it was also the third different version of the show. This time the production reverted to the (original) 1986 Broadway version as far as the running-order and plot development was concerned, but combined this with the cut-down scenery and reduced cast numbers of the rewritten 1991 American Jewish Theatre version. This Bridewell version used a four-piece Klezmer band (the other versions had been scored for full orchestra and two pianos respectively.) As always, the show received mixed notices, but there was unanimous praise for Sally Ann Triplett as Rebecca. (plus)

Commentaire: This was a joint production between the English National Opera’s outreach programme and Cardboard Citizens, Britain’s only professional theatre company for the homeless. The anticipation was a telling comment on how little had changed from the 18th century’s attitude to the poor and the ruling class. But the end result was felt to be a bit of a mess: the show was frequently interrupted with video-diary sound-bites from both fictional characters and today’s real homeless projected on a bank of TV monitors; the action was held up with some strange karaoke-type pop songs including “Love and Marriage”, “It’s Not Unusual”, “Thank Heaven for Little Girls” and even “Jealousy”, sung by Lucy Lockit strapped into a wheelchair. . . It was generally considered to be well-intentioned, but an experiment that had not quite come off. (plus)

Commentaire: This was planned for Sondheim’s Broadway debut in the early 1950s, but prior to the opening Lemuel Ayers, the producer, suddenly died from leukaemia. His widow decided to abandon the project and refused to release the rights to anyone else. The show remained unproduced for more than 40 years. In 1995 permission was granted for a group of students at Birmingham University to present a concert version, and this led to Sondheim allowing the Bridewell to stage this world premiere - a production of enormous interest to critics, performers and musical enthusiasts alike. They have been spun into a story of sorts, where a man and a woman are each alone in their respective apartments on Saturday night. They sing of loneliness and longing, although there is a glimmer of hope in the air. Finally, however, as the last song says: “It Wasn’t Meant to Happen”. Generally regarded as a treat for Sondheim lovers, but one critic acidly pointed out “this slight revue proves only that Sondheim knows which songs to dump”. (plus)
