Presse: "I wish this production was a high-point in both men’s careers. But there’s no getting round it: this is a major disappointment." Dominic Cavendish for The Telegraph

"Even if the play occasionally suffers from information overload, it is still a rich, ideas-packed work that offers a defence of goodness whatever its ultimate source. The play also works because we are made to care about Hilary, who is excellently played by Olivia Vinall." Michael Billington for The Guardian

"Hytner directs an elegant, incisive account of a piece that buzzes with complex ideas, passionately and wittily expressed, but which never quite exerts a strong enough grip as drama." Paul Taylor for The Independent

"Flecked with Stoppard’s wry, ironic humour and luminous intelligence, directed with exemplary lucidity by Hytner, this is a play that, movingly, wrestles with deep questions about what makes us who we are and with the implications of materialism." Sarah Hemming for The Financial Times

"The heroine's formidability and vulnerability are brilliantly entwined in McCrory's performance." Paul Taylor for The Independent

"It’s McCrory’s performance that makes the production satisfyingly muscular. She captures Medea’s animal savagery and the agony of being transfixed by her own grim destiny." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

Commentaire: Sera transféré au Haymarket Theatre dès septembre 2014  (plus)

Presse: "Directed with terrific niftiness by Nicholas Hytner, the play weaves between politically incorrect humour and something darker and more troubling as it raised awkward questions about the divisions between honourable and disgusting journalistic muck-raking. It suggests that, while a great many of our institutions may be found wanting at the moment, the NT is on exhilarating and exemplary form." Paul Taylor for The Independent

"Maybe it's too much to expect Bean to map out a path for the future. But what he has done is to remind us of the sins of the powerful and put an array of scandals on to the National Theatre stage. I mean it as a compliment when I say his play has a tabloid energy and bravura." Michael Billington for The Guardian

"Some terrific acting work across the board and slick direction from Nicholas Hytner keep it motoring along. It’s only in the darker second half, though, when despite Bean’s constant heavy-handed editorialising, the parallel real-life tragedies lurking behind the cartoon knock-about make themselves felt, that the show stops looking like a bold, topical summer filler, and becomes required, conscience-pricking viewing." Dominic Cavendish for The Daily Telegraph

"The Royal National Theatre’s quick-response play about the hacking scandal is less anti-Press than one might have expected. It is more ‘Drop the Dead Donkey’ than ‘J’accuse’. The heaviness of the humour obscures much of the seriousness." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail

"Bean’s satire is deliberately grotesque. The cartoonish elements are richly enjoyable, laced with political incorrectness, yet they’re interleaved with some altogether more subtle jokes. Even if the show feels a little too broad and could do with a trim, it’s barbed, dense and very funny." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

Commentaire:

Presse: "Hytner's brilliantly acted (both leads are stunning), acutely penetrating and deeply disturbing account of the play." Paul Taylor for The Independent

"It’s a gripping production of a tragedy that is also an intensely painful psychological thriller, and though the production lasts more than three hours, it never loosens its dramatic hold. This Othello has all the hallmarks of Hytner at his best - it’s witty, agile, lucid and deeply felt...Any production of Othello stands or falls with the actors playing Othello and Iago, and the double-act between Lester’s Moor and Rory Kinnear’s Iago proves exceptional. " Charles Spencer for Daily Telegraph

"Everything about the production is clear, clever and comprehensible. But, partly because it denies Othello something of his musical grandeur and makes Iago's diseased mind the main event, I'd say it scores a successful victory on points without delivering the final, knockout blow." Michael Billington for The Guardian

"Though it lasts well over three hours, Sir Nicholas Hytner’s inventive Othello zips along." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail

"Adrian Lester is a charismatic, dignified Othello... a reminder, as if we needed one, of his great quality as a Shakespearean actor. Rory Kinnear is mesmerising as Iago...The modern setting reveals the play’s paranoid mood and uncomfortable humour but muffles the tragedy a little. Still, this is a distinguished, lucid production. Commentaire: Award-winning writer Alan Bennett is reunited with director Nicholas Hytner and Olivier Award-winning actress Frances de la Tour, with whom he worked on The History Boys and The Habit of Art.

Alan Bennett is one of Britain’s most celebrated playwrights, and the much anticipated People is the sixth of his plays to have its premiere at the National Theatre. Following its original run at the National Theatre, The History Boys transferred to Broadway, winning the Tony Award for Best Play in 2006, and toured internationally before being turned into a film, again directed by Nicholas Hytner and with a cast including Frances de la Tour.

Bennett and Hytner also collaborated on the award-winning play and film The Madness of King George and their last stage production, The Habit of Art, was broadcast as part of National Theatre Live in 2010.  (plus)

Presse: "Mordantly funny new play...while the play has one or two awkward contrivances, it confirms Bennett's peculiar gift for blending the satiric and the elegiac. " Michael Billington for The Guardian

"Bennett’s writing brims with ideas — perhaps too many. Several of the characters are underdeveloped, and I’m not absolutely convinced that he has decided what this play’s main concern is. Yet it has bite..." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

"People has a good theme but the production doesn’t half plod in places." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail

"People is maybe not the most even-handed of plays but it demonstrates that, in his 78th year, Alan Bennett's acute wit and talent for challenging cosy English complacencies are in a very healthy state of preservation." Paul Taylor for The Independent

"At 78, Alan Bennett has lost little of his mischievous wit and sense of the ridiculous. His eagerly awaited new comedy, People, may not be out of the top drawer of his work, lacking the emotional depth and sly subtlety of his best writing, but it is entertaining, funny and touching...This may not be Bennett at the very top of his game, but it is still a richly enjoyable evening. Commentaire: The London staging began previews on November 6, 2010 with an opening night on November 16 and ran in repertoire with other National Theatre productions. There was a mixed reaction to this show: all agreed it had stunning choreography and a superb cast of singers and dancers, but for many its political message was lost in what was ultimately another “jukebox musical”. By avoiding an honest portrayal (in real life Fela had 27 wives and died of AIDS because of his refusal to use condoms) it was felt this was a whitewash and missed opportunity to create a serious and groundbreaking musical.  (plus)

Presse: "Somehow Bill T Jones’s production proceeds in fits and starts without ever achieving a satisfying dramatic momentum. I longed for a stronger sense of narrative, and more depth beyond the showbiz razzle-dazzle" Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

"It's a loud, brash, energetic spectacle...While musically impressive, the production could do with a stronger book. The story is flimsy and confused, and there's a lack of narrative drive." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

"The best bits, for me, were those that make you feel on your pulses why Fela's music, with its sarcastic pidgin lyrics and obstinately insistent rhythms." Paul Taylor for The Independent

"It's a great story, and one told with enormous verve in Bill T Jones's kaleidoscopic production. The dancing is ecstatic, the music lifts the spirits, and the stage is alive with movement...I've never seen a show quite like it at the National. " Michael Billington for The Guardian

Commentaire:

Michael Billington for The Guardian

Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

"Rory Kinnear’s intelligent, dry-witted student prince...An intriguing production that prompts and probes like an interrogation in a bare room.

Commentaire:

Presse: "This version thins the dramatic texture and turns the play into a character study: one in which the sensual, death-haunted, strangely passive Danton confronts the repressed, life-fearing, remorselessly active Robespierre. That is a vital part of Büchner's play; but to focus so exclusively on that element is to miss the larger point that they are also history's puppets."
Michael Billington for The Guardian

"Certain plays are easier to admire than to love. Danton’s Death (1835), written by Georg Büchner in a fit of revolutionary zeal when he was just 21, indubitably falls into this category."
Fiona Mountford for The Evening Standard

"Thrilling production...a truly gripping drama. "
Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

"Visually arresting and viscerally involving production."
Mark Shenton for The Stage

"'Danton’s Death' is not uplifting or touching but it makes for an interesting, admirably serious evening."

D'Alan Bennett

Metteur en scène: Nicholas Hytner •
Chorégraphe:
Avec: Richard Griffiths (W H Auden), Alex Jennings (Benjamin Britten), Frances de la Tour, Danny Burns, Martin Chamberlain, Philip Childs, John Heffernan, Barbara Kirby, Elliot Levey, Adrian Scarborough, Stephen Wight, Tom Attwood, Laurence Belcher, Otto Farrant, Toby Graham.

Commentaire: The Habit of Art is a 2009 play by English playwright Alan Bennett, which centers on a fictional meeting between W. H. Auden and Benjamin Britten while Britten is composing the opera “Death in Venice”. The play has been described as a multi-layered postmodern masterpiece, describing the meeting between poet W.H. Auden (Richard Griffiths) and composer Benjamin Britten (Alex Jennings) in 1972, some 30 years after the failure of the opera they wrote together. But the play is not just about this meeting… it is a rehearsal of the play, so includes the stage manager (Frances de la Tour) who steps in occasionally to read the part for an absent actor, the writer, who must field complaints about his play, and even a casual walk on from another play being performed elsewhere in the theatre complex.  (plus)

Presse: "Nicholas Hytner directs with an unerring instinct for the volatile nature of the material in a cracking production that flirtatiously keeps the audience up to speed with the outrageous amount of information and allusion." Paul Taylor for The Independent

"Absolute cracker, often wonderfully and sometimes filthily funny (this is not a show for the prudish), but also deeply and unexpectedly moving." Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

"Satirical, serious and self-indulgent, sometimes all at the same time." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail

"The play has the characteristic Bennett mix of wit and wistfulness...A play that could easily seem tricksy is also given a superbly fluid production by Nicholas Hytner and is beautifully acted." Michael Billington for The Guardian

"So much of The Habit of Art is so engaging, it seems churlish to point out its basic problem: which is that even the excellence of Richard Griffiths and Alex Jennings can’t stop one feeling that Bennett doesn’t fully trust his material. He isn’t confident that his portraiture can sustain a full-length play...the play lacks dramatic tension." Benedict Nightingale for The Times

"It’s funny, and sometimes brilliantly so, but strangely uninvolving. Although Bennett savours his material, he doesn’t make it sing." Henry Hitchings' for The Evening Standard

Commentaire: Dance sequences and acrobatic displays were interpolated into this production as a means of depicting the torture scenes. For several critics this was felt to be self-consciously “arty” and embarrassing. The political message of the work still made an impact, but 30 years on, some found that impact diminished.  (plus)

Presse: PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Excellent company of actors." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "The production is a sterile piece of theatre about theatre: a celebration of technical ingenuity that leaves the heart untouched. " SAM MARLOWE for THE TIMES says, "An intellectual and aesthetic pleasure — albeit a demanding one...A freeflowing meditation on inner life and the nature of identity, Woolf’s work follows six friends from childhood to middle age and towards death, and takes the form of a succession of subjective internal monologues. There is no dialogue and, though certain events emerge, no plot...True, it’s not easy, and Mitchell requires " JOHN THAXTER for THE STAGE says, "Powerfully played." SARAH HEMMING for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "Never less than absorbing...Richard Eyre’s production combines a seductive, brooding atmosphere with wonderful comic details. Yet the piece also frustrates. It does not give enough substance to Mossman’s reputation for brilliance..." RHODA KOENIG for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Unfortunately, Ben Chaplin, for most of the evening, stands with his arms folded across his chest and speaks in a guarded tone of voice. He's lovely to look at, but the lack of charm or command (at least one is a newsman's necessity) is obvious." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "The play is given a perfectly pitched production from Richard Eyre and a commanding performance from Ben Chaplin...But, much as I enjoyed the evening, it is one that, like Mossman himself, leaves its mysteries unresolved. I was left untouched and unmoved…” MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, “A brilliant naturalistic performance conceived very much in terms of Shaw's own stage persona… Shaw is a fine Winnie.” PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, “It's arguable… that this Winnie is too archly aware of the audience and that this diminishes our sense of her terrible loneliness.” CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, “a knockout production… Brilliantly acted by Shaw, it is a staging that superbly captures that combination of wild laughter and existential terror that is the hallmark of all Beckett's greatest work.” ALEKS SIERZ for THE STAGE says, “An extraordinary production… You’d expect a bravura performance from Shaw and that’s exactly what you get.” BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, “Memorable performance in an awesome play.”

CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Just as special, just as moving, the second time around...Melly Still directs a beautifully fluent and uncluttered production that handles the complex narrative with clarity and panache...This is not a show for the excessively squeamish, or children under 12, but I suspect almost everyone else will be bowled over by its power and humanity." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Engrossing...bold, robust and never the least prurient or morbid."

There is no dialogue and, though certain events emerge, no plot...True, it’s not easy, and Mitchell requires " JOHN THAXTER for THE STAGE says, "Powerfully played." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "...fixated on the way the actors wrought brilliant theatrical, visual and aural enhancements of Woolf 's text." SUSANNAH CLAPP for THE OBSERVER says, "Ingenious, brilliantly acted but ultimately academic production."

Avec: Ben Daniels (Laurent), Charlotte Emmerson (Therese), Mark Hadfield (Grivet), Emma Lowndes (Suzanne), Judy Parfitt (Madame Raquin), Patrick Kennedy (Camille), Timothy Allsop, Judith Coke, Michael Culkin, Rendah Heywood, Chris Johnston

Commentaire:

Presse: NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Feverish, flamboyant staging." ALASTAIR MACAULAY for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "It’s all dully interesting and admirably flat...One watches this Therese Raquin as if from an immense distance, and with total detachment." RHODA KOENIG for THE INDEPENDENT says, "The impression is of a story so adapted to contemporary, local taste that its odd, disturbing flavour has been adapted out of it. This Therese Raquin is easy to swallow, but an hour later you're hungry for a real play. MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "The play, in short, is nothing like as powerful as the novel." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "I suspect that Zola's original novel will haunt my memory far more potently than this disappointingly pallid and laborious stage version." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "A play that, far from being the scientific case-study Zola wanted, is as grimly moral a warning against extramarital hanky-panky as any ever written."

Première preview: mardi 10 octobre 2006
Première: jeudi 19 octobre 2006
Dernière: jeudi 04 janvier 2007

Salle: Lyttelton Theatre (900 places)

Compositeur: Jeanine Tesori •
Parolier: Tonu Kushner •
Libettiste: Tonu Kushner
Metteur en scène: George C Wolfe •
Chorégraphe: Hope Clarke •
Avec: Tonya Pinkins {Caroline Thibodeaux), Greg Bernstein/Perry Millward/Jonny Weldon (Noah), Anna Francolini (Rose Gellman), Clive Rowe, Ian Lavender, Richard Henders, Hilton McRae Valda Avicks

Commentaire: This through-composed musical, combining spirituals, blues, Motown , classical music and Jewish Klezmer, began off-Broadway in November 2003, and received a Broadway production from May 2004 running for 126 performances. In spite of its very short run, it received six Tony Award nominations. The London production at the National Theatre did not achieve its hoped-for West End transfer, but it did win the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. (Tony Kushner was better known as the author of the AIDS play “Angels in America” )  (plus)

Presse: NICOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Caroline, Or Change turns out, therefore, to be a quaintly charming musical, beautifully acted...Unfortunately Kushner's almost non-stop lyrics, whose words too often become submerged by the 10-strong orchestra, are embarrassingly inept, banal and rambling." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "A remarkable musical...the real joy lies in finding a musical that combines compassion with social awareness." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Amazing piece of music-theatre...Kushner's great achievement is to make the political personal in a work that combines great dramatic intensity with wild flights of fantasy and music of thrilling variety and strength...Tonya Pinkins is simply sensational in the title role" BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Tesori’s score, which embraces Afro-American and Jewish music, rock and blues and gospel, does help to give the evening the size and significance it’s in danger of lacking." ALEKS SIERZ for THE STAGE says, "Enjoyable to watch and highly emotional." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "The staging by George C Wolfe is a pictorial joy. Caroline, or Change makes a delightful change from the usual no-brainer musical."

Metteur en scène: Conor McPherson •
Chorégraphe:
Avec: Ron Cook (Mr Lockhart), Conleth Hill (Ivan Curry), Karl Johnson (James 'Sharky' Harkin), Jim Norton (Richard Harkin), Michael McElhatton (Nicky Giblin)

Commentaire:

Presse: NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Compelling...meticulously-wrought production, the finest ensemble acting in town." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Sparkling and suspenseful new play." KATE BASSETT for THE INDEPENDENT says, "This is like The Birthday Party crossed with Faust too. Yet it is also a hilarious, spooky and delving play about living hells, drying out, despair and hope. The superb cast includes Jim Norton as a horribly demanding invalid, Karl Johnson as his desolate brother, a comically lurching Conleth Hill and Ron Cook as the predatory, smirking Lockhart." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "There’s some fine writing here and...some excellent acting. But there are doubts. Doesn’t the author, who also directs, take inordinate time evoking this boozy, crazy household? Isn’t the diabolic intrusion a bit over the top? And couldn’t he tell us more about Sharkey’s sin and its effect on the man himself? Johnson’s pinched, arid face and uneasy body language reveal a lot, but a few more lines might clarify and maybe deepen the picture...Still, I laughed, became increasingly absorbed, and ended up impressed by McPherson’s originality." JOHN THAXTER for THE STAGE says, "Making his brilliant National Theatre debut as author and director, Conor McPherson’s new play powerfully recalls Pinter’s The Homecoming with its grim all-male household dominated by a stick-wielding bully in an armchair."

Avec: Alex Jennings (Subtle), Simon Russell Beale (Face), Lesley Manville (Doll), Ian Richardson (Sir Epicure Mammon), Tristan Beint, Elisabeth Dermot Walsh, Bryan Dick, Tim McMullan, Amit Shah, Sam Spruell

Commentaire:

Presse: PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Fresh, inventively funny production." KATE BASSETT also for THE INDEPENDENT says, "This is not Hytner's most successful modernisation. It often feels mildly strained, lacks real bite and is not quite thought through, actually missing a few tricks." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "The modern-dress performances brim with vitality. Jennings's estuary-accented wide boy Subtle sets the deceptions going in a comedy classic performance...Russell Beale delights and deftly bridges class divides thanks to speedy costume changes." SUSANNAH CLAPP for OBSERVER says, "Nicholas Hytner has gone for gold. And got it. There never was much doubt that his production of The Alchemist would be full of fine moments: a cast headed by Alex Jennings, Lesley Manville and Simon Russell Beale more or less guaranteed that. It was less predictable that Ben Jonson's play about 17th-century con-artists would present so juicy and precise a portrait of 21st-century metropolitan life." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Fine and hilarious...This, for my money, is one of the funniest plays in the English language." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "A fresh and superbly inventive production...Rarely have I seen an apparently dusty classic given such an exhilarating modern makeover." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Russell Beale and Jennings... there is no funnier or more adroit double-act on the London stage...The evening is irresistible."

De James Joyce (1914)

Metteur en scène: James MacDonald •
Chorégraphe:
Avec: Adrian Dunbar, Thomas Grant, Dervla Kirwan, Peter McDonald , Marcella Plunkett

Commentaire:

Presse: RHODA KOENIG for THE INDEPENDENT says, "A production that is a poem and a revelation. For three hours we experience that rarest quality on the contemporary stage - stillness - and it never loses its grip." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "MacDonald's production sacrifices Exiles' governing mood of perverse and agonised sexual confusion, which McDonald, Miss Plunkett and Dervla Kirwan's troubled Bertha powerfully transmit, in favour of Dunbar's misguided, winsome perkiness. James Joyce is accordingly done down." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Fine revival...Some may dismiss this as a novelist's play; to me it emerges as a neglected landmarks of modern theatre that explores the byzantine complexities of marriage with the honesty of genius." ALEKS SIERZ for THE STAGE says, "It’s an interesting rather than a dazzling play...restrained production." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Even in 2006 this is a play that asks sharp, searching questions about the power of mind over body, the difficulty of emotional honesty, the limits of tolerance in vital relationships and, above all, the sheer complexity of our sexual feelings. " DOMINIC CAVENDISH for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Fascinating, finely judged but finally only half-persuasive."

Commentaire:

Presse: NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Anyone who comes fresh to the play should be warned they are not seeing some radical reinterpretation, but a pallid version of the real thing...Mitchell's Seagull does, though, generate an intriguing, desolate atmosphere." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "This is an evening where acting takes second place to effect and the sight of a decaying class tangoing its way to oblivion. It is director's theatre at its most indulgent in which the play, as Chekhov wrote it, is definitely not the thing." DOMENIC CAVENDISH for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "One of the most insightful Chekhov interpreters of her generation with a daringly dark and stripped-back Seagull." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "The period is somewhat confusingly updated to the 1920s...the main problem is an excess of atmospherics and detail...One should feel their pain at the end. I didn’t." ALASTAIR MACAULAY for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "It’s clever, it’s elegant, it’s interesting – and so what if it isn’t the least bit moving? Or if it isn’t the play Chekhov wrote?"

Presse: NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Deftly effective and powerfully acted production...The Overwhelming gives political theatre serious allure." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "What the play has to say is important; but Rogers's dramatic technique is spasmodically flawed....The technical shortcomings are camouflaged by the speed and clarity of Max Stafford-Clark's Cottesloe production." JEREMY AUSTIN for THE STAGE says, "Powerful and evocative...A brilliant and horrifying evening’s theatre." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Best new play I've seen this year...one of the most entertaining. MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "While the play was a startling antidote to 60s naturalism, what now seems more interesting is Shaffer's understanding of the imperialist instinct in which the conquest of the Incas becomes a metaphor for modern Iraq." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Lumbering production by Trevor Nunn, full of empty displays of ritual, dodgy choreography and naff mime sequences" BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "There’s much to admire in Nunn’s use of a bare, round, wooden stage with plenty of gorgeous costumes but a minimum of props."

Presse: NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Despite the play's thematic flaws, Leigh and his superb players know just how to keep an audience tantalisingly hooked." BEN RUSSELL for THE INDEPENDENT says, " A good, but slightly pedestrian play that lacks the layered richness of Leigh's finest stage and film drama." MICHAEL BILINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Funny-sad exploration of the inherent tensions of family life and the nature of the world around us...This is a passionate, funny, moving and well-observed play." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "It is absolutely terrific, at times as screamingly funny as Abigail's Party, at others as painfully touching and true such superb Leigh films as Secrets and Lies and Vera Drake." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Leigh’s improvisational skills — actually the actors improvise while he prods, listens, selects, edits — have created a piece that is consistently absorbing and remarkably topical...almost all the time this is quality Leigh: amusing, touching, wise." ALASTAIR MACAULAY for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "They give us keenly believable views of British teenagers today and offer revealing sociology and vivid entertainment...The actors are young and astoundingly good. PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "At the end, I felt as exhausted by the struggle to have a good time as the game cast must be by the strain of trying to provide one." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Dizzily enjoyable revival." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Has a certain period charm." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "There’s no faulting the energy of Hall’s cast or the exotic excellence of Mark Thompson’s designs... I just wasn’t convinced that Once in a Lifetime was worth the effort." ALISTAIR SMITH for THE STAGE says, "It falls down due to a lack of substance and fails to create anything truly memorable. Like its source material it is just a bit too frothy."

Commentaire:

Presse: PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "This rather restrained and painstaking play - premiered in Howard Davies's well-acted, joltingly modern-dress production - offers an intriguingly secular account of the resurrection" MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Brenton's fascinating play persuades me that it is invariably the secular dramatists who write best about spiritual matters...an exciting play that explores big issues from a point of rationalist doubt." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Much of this play moved me...Adam Godley is superb as the ascetic Paul." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Tense production." ALEKS SIERZ for THE STAGE says, "a compelling study of faith and of the human need for stories that explain the world and inspire action."

De David Edgar

Metteur en scène: Michael Attenborough •
Chorégraphe:
Avec: Oliver Ford Davies, Emma Fielding, Kate Best, David Troughton, Geoffrey Beevers, Paul Bhattacharjee, Susan Brown, Trevor Cooper, Rudi Dharmalingam, Nick Fletcher, Colin Haigh, Ranjit Krishnamma, Jonathan McGuinness, Aaron Neil, Bhasker Patel, Alistair Petrie, Helen Rutter, Rebekah Staton, Ewan Stewart, Caroline Strong, Tony Turner, Deka Walmsley, Sameena Zehra

Commentaire:

Presse: NICK CURTIS for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "David Edgar's new play is an uncannily timely but thorny work that takes some struggling through." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "While I admire Edgar's desire to explore big issues on public stages and to instruct delightfully, I can't help feeling his new play offers somewhat tendentious explanations for the failure of multi-cultural policies...In short, Edgar's play doesn't quite add up and overlooks the many other sources of racial tension in Britain. But at least it occupies the Olivier stage with a certain bravura in Michael Attenborough's production." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "What [David Edgar] hasn't been able to achieve is a satisfying drama. He hits all the right topical buttons, but for long arid stretches the play resolutely refuses to come to life...There are ideas in abundance, so much clever talk...But of real human drama, and characters you genuinely come to care for, there is little evidence." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Intelligent, balanced and fair...A 23-person cast that includes Oliver Ford Davies as an educated demagogue and David Troughton as the council’s genially floundering leader, is as committed as any cast could be. They left me stimulated and impressed. But excited? Not quite." KATE BASSETT for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Hardly sparks into life at all...hasn't successfully digested and transformed all his material into an engaging drama...this is a peculiarly arid, grey and sprawling piece with too many wooden exchanges and repetitive sections that patently need redrafting. "

Presse: NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Despite the play's thematic flaws, Leigh and his superb players know just how to keep an audience tantalisingly hooked." BEN RUSSELL for THE INDEPENDENT says, " A good, but slightly pedestrian play that lacks the layered richness of Leigh's finest stage and film drama." MICHAEL BILINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Funny-sad exploration of the inherent tensions of family life and the nature of the world around us...This is a passionate, funny, moving and well-observed play." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "It is absolutely terrific, at times as screamingly funny as Abigail's Party, at others as painfully touching and true such superb Leigh films as Secrets and Lies and Vera Drake." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Leigh’s improvisational skills — actually the actors improvise while he prods, listens, selects, edits — have created a piece that is consistently absorbing and remarkably topical...almost all the time this is quality Leigh: amusing, touching, wise." JOHN THAXTER for THE STAGE says, "A funny but warmly touching story of secular Jewish parents struggling to cope with their son’s fierce new dedication to the Hebrew faith."

Avec: Sam Beazley (Uncle George), Stephen Boxer (Tom Hoffnung), Brian Doherty (Willie Diver), Dervla Kirwan (Alice), Peter McDonald (Eamon ), Gina McKee (Judith), T P McKenna (Father), Marcella Plunkett (Claire), Andrew Scott (Casimir)

Commentaire:

Presse: MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "fine revival..What Friel offers us is a humane analysis of the flawed Irish temper and its propensity for romance." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "unsatisfying....wilting production." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "If anyone is writing richer plays than Friel, I don’t know him, or her...Friel is the bard of loss, the poet of dislocation, and Aristocrats is a fine elegy to a disappearing world, well worth its revival at the National." PETER HEPPLE for THE STAGE says, "Andrew Scott...rather overshadows the rest of the low-key players, particularly his female siblings, Dervla Kirwan as alcoholic Alice and Gina McKee.." CHARLES SPENCER for DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Too much clotted exposition, too little living drama.....Friel is a paradoxical writer. At his greatest, he soars into the sublime. But when less than inspired, as he mostly is here, he seems like a conscientious, earthbound plodder." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "The production skilfully sustains the play's meditative, tragicomic mood. ...there is something genuinely Chekhovian in the mix of objectivity and compassion with which Friel views this dying breed...a richly ambivalent play."

Adapté librement par David Farr de la satire de Gogol "The Government Inspector"

Metteur en scène: David Farr •
Chorégraphe:

Commentaire:

Presse: NICK CURTIS for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Never quite clever or funny enough.....Farr's production has good supporting performances, deals with the dual-language problem with admirable simplicity, and has a sting in its tail. But I'm not sure, for all its sly contemporary references, that it has any more to say to us than Gogol's original." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "There are also good things in Farr's production: not least Ti Green's set filled with a baroque imperialist nostalgia. But Farr's play veers awkwardly between a paraphrase of Gogol's original and a satire on east European capitalist chaos. In the end, it feels neither one thing nor the other and leaves one hungrily waiting for Gogol." IAN JOHNS for THE TIMES says, "Sheen is superb as a self-aggrandising fantasist...But the play often drifts between riffing on Gogol and satirising post-Soviet capitalism and dilutes each’s social sting."

SUSANNAH CLAPP for THE OBSERVER says, "Giddily enjoyable." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "..I also found Broadbent’s endlessly confused quotations from the Shakespeare canon a bit wearisome. PETER HEPPLE for THE STAGE says, "What is striking...is the fluidity of Katie Mitchell’s production...As for the acting, this is true ensemble playing." Presse: NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, “Dark and fantastic epic.” JOHN TAYLOR FOR THE INDEPENDENT says, “Epic journey excels when simple drama is applied.” MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, “There is much to admire in the staging; yet the result, inevitably, is like a clipped hedge compared to Pullman's forest.” CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, “An honourable failure rather than an exhilarating success. There are some striking moments and several superb performances, but too often the production seems earthbound when it ought to soar.” BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, “I must admit that, lover of all things bold and imaginative though I hope I am, I was weary by the end…..tension and excitement get lost in the pseudo-theological blather.” ALASTAIR MACAULAY for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "It is mainly good." SUSAN ELKIN for THE STAGE says, "gloriously entertaining production."

Commentaire:

Presse: NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, “Dark and fantastic epic.” JOHN TAYLOR FOR THE INDEPENDENT says, “Epic journey excels when simple drama is applied.” MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, “There is much to admire in the staging; yet the result, inevitably, is like a clipped hedge compared to Pullman's forest.” CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, “An honourable failure rather than an exhilarating success. There are some striking moments and several superb performances, but too often the production seems earthbound when it ought to soar.” BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, “I must admit that, lover of all things bold and imaginative though I hope I am, I was weary by the end…..tension and excitement get lost in the pseudo-theological blather.” ALASTAIR MACAULAY for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "It is mainly good." Metteur en scène: Richard Wilson •
Chorégraphe:
Avec: Antony Sher

Commentaire:

Presse: NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "I sometimes found Richard Wilson's stylised, austere production and the manner of Sir Antony's performance fussily decorative." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Antony Sher, as adapter and performer, and Richard Wilson as director, have such aesthetic tact and imaginative sobriety that they capture precisely the book's controlled outrage." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH "The person we encounter on the pages of Levi's book, and in Sher's perfectly judged performance, is a human being who has emphatically not been destroyed by the very worst this world has to offer. That is the beacon in the terrible darkness." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "This is an evening beyond criticism."

BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Sharp and funny, sometimes sentimental, and never less than absorbing and fun." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "In the course of Lucy Bailey's splendidly acted production - which imparts a dream-like feel to the proceedings, with its spaced-out set, weird aerial angles, and torrential falls of sand for the seashore scenes - Lenkiewicz's more distinctive strengths become increasingly apparent. She has a gift for combining the lyrical and the eccentrically comic" SERENA DAVIES for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "The play was...so winningly portrayed that I forgave it its sentimentality and fell for its charm."

MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "A weird hybrid which survives chiefly as a vehicle for Alex Jennings and Zoe Wanamaker." IAN JOHNS for THE TIMES says, "Despite its lulls, there are enough big laughs to make this adaptation great fun." MICHAEL COVENEY for THE DAILY MAIL says, "A delightfully imperfect night out." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "I was deluged with wave upon wave of comic pleasure." SHERIDAN MORLEY for TELETEXT says, "Great performances from Zoe Wanamaker and Alex Jennings."

Commentaire: This was Nicholas Hytner’s first show as the new artistic director of the Royal National Theatre, and it seemed to herald a new era, very different from Trevor Nunn’s series of American musicals’ “golden oldies”.
It had been rewritten and enlarged from earlier “fringe” versions at the Edinburgh Festival and the BAC, and proved to be hugely controversial. The clash of high operatic music and big choral parodies with scatological lyrics about whores, crack, and junkies made some critics compare it to a modern day “Beggar’s Opera”. A nearly naked Jesus admitting to being “a bit gay”, a plump glam-rock God descending on a golden swing singing “It Ain’t Easy Being Me”, and Jesus and Satan performing a baroque duet caused some critics to scream blasphemy. Adam and Eve and the Holy Virgin appearing as guest artists on the Jerry Springer TV chat-show made some critics respond enthusiastically to the satire on the cheap values of modern society. The show won four Olivier Awards including Best Musical.  (plus)

Presse: NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "It's vulgar, salacious but such a pleasure."

MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "But the supreme merit of Lee's Lyttelton production is that it is superbly sung."

BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, " If ever a show seems destined for cult status, this is it."

Commentaire:

Presse: MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "McCafferty's ability to show not just the way individual lives intersect, but the collision of private and public worlds, is striking" BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "This is, as someone says, a place where people feel as much in control of their lives as lumps of meat in that abattoir — and it’s brought to life with care, intelligence and, yes, love."
