Greeted with pin-drop silence, this is a play that genuinely enlarges one's understanding." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Lavery and her cast make you see the complexity of the issues, clinical as well as moral. They also make you feel the loss, the pain, the unbearable waste." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Frozen is a truly outstanding play, brilliantly performed."

Chorégraphe: Matthew Bourne •
Avec: Lauren Kennedy (Nellie Forbush), Philip Quast (Emile), Edward Baker-Duly (Lt. Cable), Sheila Francisco (Bloody Mary) , Nick Holder (Luther).

Commentaire: This major revival at the National Theatre interpolated two songs that had been cut from the original production: “My Girl Back Home” and “The Time is Now”. It was staged with some grainy newsreel projections, and there was an attempt at “gritty realism” by ensuring the crew of GIs were tubby, sweaty and a long way from the usual dancing chorus boys. There was the usual criticism that taxpayers’ money should not be used to subsidise commercial musicals at the National Theatre, but it was generally agreed this was an excellent production of a now slightly dated show.  (plus)

Presse: BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, “South Pacific at the National is almost an enchanted evening.”

CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, “The show may not be in the same league as the National's earlier musical hits, but at its best, as the song says, it offers some enchanted evening.”

MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, “Decently dull production.” He goes on to say, “An evening that dutifully delivers a musical classic but only briefly acquires a touch of ecstasy.”

RHODA KOENIG for THE INDEPENDENT says, “A fabulous cast includes Lauren Kennedy as a wonderfully brassy-tender Nellie, Edward Baker-Duly as the clean-cut, anguished Lieutenant, Nick Holder as a flabby, fast-talking small-time Sergeant Bilko, and the fine John Shrapnel as the humane but comically exasperated Commander of the island.”

NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, “Glamour-laden, beautifully drilled production.”

MICHAEL COVENEY for THE DAILY MAIL said, “Nunn's revival, magically designed by John Napier with exquisite lighting by David Hersey, is every bit as good as the RNT's previous Rodgers and Hammersteins, Carousel and Oklahoma!”

SHERIDAN MORLEY for TELETEXT says the production is , "fatally unsexy" and "underpowered". He goes on to say, "It is also bloodless, overlong and lacks any narrative drive."

Commentaire:

Presse: The play has received reasonable notices from the popular press….
CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, “The play is actually a bit of a mess, with Ravenhill uneasily caught between mischievous titillation and serious moralising”. However, he goes on to say, “There is no mistaking the play's crude and cheerful vigour, and there are some fine performances.”

MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, “An evening rich in rudery and ambivalence.”

DAVID BENEDICT for THE INDEPENDENT says, “The only shocking thing about the evening is how splendidly enjoyable it is.”

NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, “Mother Clap’s Molly House is a daring, impassioned lament for decadent gay lives, but becomes too captivated by the gay high-jinks it presents and condemns.”

JOHN PETER for THE SUNDAY TIMES says, "Ravenhill's writing is tough, eloquent, sardonic.."

SHRIDAN MORLEY for TELETEXT says, "It becomes increasingly clear that Ravenhill is not just a sensationalist. Mother Clap is an ambitious tragicomedy of sex and seduction..."

PETER HEPPLE for THE STAGE says, "Though the second half is not as strong as the first .... the societal strictures and economic forces that lie at the heart of Ravenhill's work are strongly defined, the deliberately shocking scenes being softened by humour with a fine young company on top form."

RACHEL HALLIBURTON for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Davies' production reveals the brilliance of Miller's analysis of the way social illusion functioned in the post-war years." Presse: IAN JOHNS for THE TIMES says, “Much of Marber’s peppy writing…ensure that the play is never dull, and some moments…. have a real emotional edge…..But the play, diverting as it is, remains as dissatisfying as its ending…” CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says Howard Katz is “marvellously played by the great and undervalued Ron Cook”. He goes on to say, “ Though individual scenes are often sharply written and blackly comic, none of the supporting cast are given enough time to develop fully rounded characters.” PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says Howard Katz is “played with an engaging, driven energy and end-of-the-tether recklessness by the wonderful Ron Cook”. He goes on to say, “It's good to report that Marber's new fervent pro-life stance hasn't robbed his writing of its bite.” MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, “The play is never dull, but leaves one feeling that Marber follows too many paths on the way to Howard's end.” NICHOLAS DE JONGH describes it as “a superficial wallow in the miseries of Howard Katz” and goes on to say, “Howard Katz is all heat and little light.” SHERIDAN MORLEY for TELETEXT describes it as "an uneven production". JOHN PETER for THE SUNDAY TIMES describes the play as a "haunting, aching, wounding play.." and says, "Patrick Marber skilfully recaptures the essence of one man's cosmic struggle."

Commentaire:

Presse: JANE EDWARDES for TIME OUT says,"Hytner has proved, once again, that he knows how to tame the National's arena stage." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "There are a few good moments in this production at the National's Olivier, but many more that are either mediocre or downright disgraceful. It is a shock to discover that Hytner - a director I have always admired - is capable of such crass vulgarity."BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "A decidedly uneven affair: fine Leontes, strangely underpowered Hermione, and modern dress that adds a bit but, in one major instance, subtracts lots." MICHAEL BILLINGTON says, "By opting for modern dress, Hytner...anchors Leontes's jealousy in a plausible world of tortured politesse, and provides a perfect setting for a major performance from Alex Jennings as Leontes." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says,Hytner's production is at its best when giving us a sharp, fresh sense of the ethos that helps explain Leontes' sudden descent into madness." BEN DOWELL for THE STAGE says, "Modern take is full of wonder." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Even though Hytner's modernising touches are shrewd, his production disappoints."

Commentaire:

Presse: THE TIMES headlines, “An Edward Albee double bill on marriages in trouble leaves our reviewer unimpressed”. BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE , the Times reviewer says of Marriage Play, “Gish and Paterson are highly watchable performers, and as meticulous as the script allows, but they cannot disguise the fact that they are playing exemplars rather than people.” CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, “Although both works are intriguing, they cannot stand comparison with his greatest plays.” He goes on to say, ’Marriage Play is “a second-rate play”. And goes on to say, “You leave this double-bill feeling that you have had a couple of tasty starters but missed out on the main course.” MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN on 'Finding the Sun', “Neither Anthony Page's atmospheric production….nor the performances of Pauline Lynch and Polly Walker .. can disguise the play's wistful wispiness. Marriage Play deserves a better partner.” PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, “Both plays sound as though they were written for a commission rather than to obey some fierce creative imperative.” NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, “Magnificently disturbing double-bill.” PETER HEPPLE for THE STAGE says of ‘Finding the Sun’ says, “Too elliptic to strike home.” BRIAN LOGAN for TIME OUT says, “ 'Marriage Play' fails interestingly, ‘Finding the Sun’ flops catastrophically”

Presse: THE GUARDIAN describes the production as "Fluid and inventive." THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Ravishing is the word for it. Marcel Proust's vast novel, his reminiscence of childhood, love and desire in high French society, has been triumphantly compressed, distilled and transmuted for performance on stage." THE STAGE says, "It is the general atmosphere, conveyed on a largely empty stage, which is the main achievement of Trevis' production." THE STAGE goes on to say, "Of necessity the acting style has to be direct, and most of the cast accomplish it." THE SUNDAY TIMES describes the play as "a thrilling suprise". SHERIDAN MORLEY for TELETEXT says, "This is a child's guide to Proust and an epic social history of 20th-century France. A great National achievement." TIME OUT says, "Sebastian Harcombe brings a languid touch to the character of Marcel, but elsewhere the acting is often crude." THE TIMES says, "It pains me to say that the play falls shorter of those unscalable Proustian peaks than the film script...." THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Journey from page to stage leaves Proust and Pinter's Remembrance sadly forgettable." THE INDEPENDENT says, "Unfortunately, Trevis's production is awash with instantly forgettable moments and at some points, it's also excruciatingly clumsy."

Commentaire:

Presse: NICHOLAS DE JONGE for THE EVENING STANDARD liked this production saying, “Playboy keeps us balanced on dramatic tenterhooks.” CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, “In its mixture of ribald comedy and raw tragedy, in its blending of dialect speech and great poetry, in its masterful plotting and richness of character, it seems like the template on which Irish theatre has been built. “ BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES loved the play saying, “The Playboy is a masterwork….Is there a play which deals more effectively with the savagery within, the lure of lawlessness, the dangers of fantasy, and several other subjects that still preoccupy dramatists in our islands? I can’t think of one.” JOHN PETER for THE SUNDAY TIMES says, "The National Theatre has come up trumps with Fiona Buffini's fiercely gripping production." JONATHAN MYERSON for THE INDEPENDENT was not impressed by the play saying,”.. the realism only shines a cruel light on Synge's wordiness, forcing the cast into arch and laboured comedy … raining unrealistic blows on one another, or whispering so as to be unheard a mere six feet away. This is crude playmaking…”

Metteur en scène: Trevor Nunn • Corin Redgrave •
Chorégraphe:
Avec: Corin Redgrave as 'Wilde', Sheila Hancock

Commentaire:

Presse: DOMINIC CAVENDISH for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "This double-bill on the National's Cottesloe stage - a new play by Neil Bartlett and a monologue woven from De Profundis by Merlin Holland, both starring Corin Redgrave as the king of bons mots - is an elegant, unsentimental affair." SUSANNAH CLAPP for the OBSERVER says, " Redgrave's performance in De Profundis .....is impressive, though his Irish cadences see-saw repetitively." JOHN THAXTER for THE STAGE says, "The Play ( In Extremis) sits heavily on Redgrave's shoulders, but Sheila Hancock...gives a many-layered portrayal of a woman teasingly recalling this encounter from beyond the grave." MADELEINE NORTH for TIME OUT says, "This is an imaginative pairing, offering an intimacy with Wilde only a dramatisation of this kind could achieve."

Presse: THE INDEPENDENT says, "Jeremy Sams's splendidly cast revival in the Lyttelton is undoubtedly a joy and a riot." THE DAILY MAIL says, "The funniest play ever written about the theatre.." THE EVENING STANDARD says, "While Noises Off is too diffuse and unfocused to make great farce, it revels in farcical ingenuity and induces escapist laughter." THE GUARDIAN says, "..the laughs arrive in escalating waves and the cast perform with such hectic virtuosity…" CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRATH says, "Noises Off has now achieved classic status." He also says the play is " brilliantly written", "beautifully acted" and is "technically ingenious". THE SUNDAY TIMES says, "This is, quite simply, one of the National's biggest smash hits ever."

Presse: TIME OUT says, "It's been a long wait but is was worth it....Simon Russell Beale's portly appearance turns out to make an already very human Hamlet even more so." THE EVENING STANDARD was also impressed saying, "Hamlet will never be quite the same again. Simon Russell Beale caused one of the great Shakespearian sensations of our time last night, when he took on the Prince and won. " THE INDEPENDENT says, "Beale finally embraced his destiny on the Lyttelton stage...and it's a relief to report that his performance is well worth the wait. But goes on to say, "A wonderful Hamlet is constrained by a sentimentalised conception of the play." THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "There is an intelligence, humanity, humour and depth of feeling in this performance that I have never seen bettered." However, not all the critics thought Beale was great , THE DAILY EXPRESS says, "Russell Beale is a brilliant ironist, ferociously clever and funny. But for some reason he never lets rip; the pathos is there but not the poetry. In fact there's not really a single thrill in this long-gown production which despite radical cuts frequently looks like the work of the local drama society." THE STAGE headlined, "Deeply human, lacking pathos."

Commentaire: HOUSE and GARDEN (1999)
two linked plays by Alan Avckbourn
The London premieres of two new connected Alan Ayckbourn plays which are performed in the olivier and Lyttelton simultaneously. The same actors appear in both productions, one of which is set in the interior of a house while the other is set outside. However, the plays can be seen as individual comedies!  (plus)

Presse: THE INDEPENDENT says, "You don't need to be the fortune-teller at the climactic fete to predict that the National have a nice, safe middlebrow summer hit." THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, " Some of his (Alan Ayckbourn) finest, and deepest comedy." ROBERT GORE-LANGTON for THE DAILY EXPRESS says, "The Weakness of this production is that it's so unbalanced. House is a vintage comedy while Garden is anything but....Still, taken together this is an undeniably larky summer event." THE GUARDIAN says, "It is not just a triumph of theatrical logistics: Ayckbourn has important things to say about the moral mayhem of life." THE TIMES says, "The Ingenuity is even greater than in his tripartite Norman Conquests 30 years ago." NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD gave the show a luke-warm response saying, "Once exposed to the comedic pleasures of House and Garden, you see there's much less to the spectacular novelties than first meets the interested eye." JOHN PETER for THE SUNDAY TIMES says, "Haig gives one of the best performances of his career" He goes on to say, "Of the two plays, Garden is the weaker....Garden is noticeably more incomplete: things happen for no apparent reason, as if some necessary explanation had been withheld." PETER HEPPLE for THE STAGE says, As they share the same plot, it is not strictly necessary to see both, though the rewards are greater, in other words the second play is all the better for having seen the first." JANE EDWARDES for TIME OUT says, "If you were only to see one play, enter the 'House' alone; if you were to see both, visit the 'Garden' first."

Commentaire:

Presse: JOHN PETER of THE SUNDAY TIMES says, " Remember This? Please! I would give anything to forget this. Stephen Poliakoff's play is one of the worst new works ever staged by the National Theatre." NICHOLAS DE JONGH of THE EVENING STANDARD says, " Remember This strikes me as a dull, labouring trawl through the hinterland of Poliakoff's imagination, a journey without much fun on the way." KATE BASSETT for the DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Staggeringly substandard new play … chronically dull piece of theatre." THE GUARDIAN says, " There are lots of incidental pleasures: one just wishes Poliakoff had found a plot to support his thesis that we are in grave danger of losing our collective memory." THE INPEPENDANT says "…..failing to work on any level: philosophical, psychological or dramatic..." DOMINIC CAVENDISH of TIME OUT says, " It's hard to know which members of the cast to feel sorry for most…" At least I found one critic who was not too hard on the play. IAN SHUTTLEWORTH for the FINANTIAL TIMES says, "It is a potentially fine yarn, performed with brio by Ron Daniels's company but, in Poliakoff's script, clunking quite a bit as it goes."

Presse: THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Look forward in pleasure as Osborne's angry hero is redeemed." DOMINIC CAVENDISH of TIME OUT says, "Michael Sheen gives us a Jimmy Porter who is fearsomely alive.." The headline in THE TIMES by BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE says, "Portrait in the attic is still a treasure." THE DAILY EXPRESS says, "The great achievement of Gregory Hersov's production is that it shows us Osborne's fabulous rant is still very much a going concern." THE DAILY MAIL says, "Sheen is simply exhilarating." THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "In the theatre - certainly at the National Theatre, where it is now excellently revived - you see simply how brilliantly Osborne knew how to write a play." THE GUARDIAN says, "It is a good play precisely because Jimmy and Alison are well-matched opponents in the endless class war." THE INDEPENDENT says, "All in all, this perfectly paced production is nothing short of a revelation." However, David Blewitt of THE STAGE says, "It has become a period piece". And goes on to say, "The feel of the time is missing."

However, its chief joy is the excellence of the acting, with Simon Russell Beale giving another fine performance as Alfred." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE of THE TIMES says, "Fine cast outshines an old tale." NICHOLAS DE JONGH of THE EVENING STANDARD says the show is "Miscast" and goes on to say, "This handsome comedy of manners is left scarred and sagging." CHARLES GODFREY-FAUSETT of TIME OUT describes the play as "Stirring" and "Gutsy".JOHN PETER of THE SUNDAY TIMES says, "This is a first-rate production, observant, precisely paced, and irresistibly and liberatingly funny."

Presse: CHARLES SPENCER of THE DAILY TELEGRAPH loved the show saying, "THIS may not be the best of all possible worlds but during the National's new production of Candide, you often believe you are watching the best of all possible musicals."

ALASTAIR MACAULEY of THE FINANCIL TIMES says, "It has a few faults and blips. Yet all the energies of those involved carry it, entertainingly and touchingly, along its long journey, until it arrives at a rich blend of wisdom and innocence that is as rare in the theatre as it is in life."

JOHN PETER of THE SUNDAY TIMES says, "This is a tremendous production: it is bursting with energy, intelligence, and sheer infectious pleasure of creative spirit."

BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE of THE TIMES says " A pacey, picaresque story needs a narrator, and gets a fine one from Simon Russell Beale, who saunters the stage informing us of devastating evils in cool, incisive style."

However, NICOLAS DE JONGH of THE EVENING STANDARD was more cool about the show, saying "The slant of Caird's distinctly winsome production and the music and songs leave me only medium-warm in appreciation of this fifties cult musical."

Metteur en scène: Anthony Page •
Chorégraphe:
Avec: Michael Feast, Julie Legrand, Niamh Linehan, Royce Mills, Frances De La Tour , Michael Williams, David Bark-jones, Windsor Davis, Peter Gowen, Frank Windsor

Commentaire:

Presse: THE EVENING STANDARD said "A glorious swoop of vintage comedy. " THE TIMES says "De la Tour plays Raisa with such wit and force, combining calculation, coquettishness and iciness of spirit, that you find yourself laughing at her, wincing from her, yet believing her horribly real." THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says "Anthony Page's Lyttelton production is ludicriously leisurely for a light entertainment... What saves the evening is the liveliness of Ayckbourn's translation and the excellence of the leading performances. " THE GUARDIAN says, " Ostrovsky's marvellous work has the exuberant madness of the best Russian comedy." THE INDEPENDENT says, "Francis De La Tour is on top form." JANE EDWARDES of TIME OUT says " Anthony Page's scrupulous production never goes so far over the top that it loses touch with the grim existence of those who are dependent on the kindness of others." PETER HEPPLE of THE STAGE says, "This is a play that one feels might have been funnier and sharper." The show received a bad review from THE FINANCIAL TIMES, which by the way I totally disagree with, saying, "None of the performances is quite good enough... "

Commentaire:

Presse: BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE, of THE TIMES says, "I don't think there is a line that does not express pain, regret, anger, alarm, desire, remorse or some blend of those emotions. Can you name a play that says so little and implies so much? No, I thought not." CHARLES SPENCER of THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says "An enthralling production of an indisputably great play." JOHN PETER of THE SUNDAY TIMES says "Pinter's haunting play, and this superlative production, are painful because you know that there is no clear or easy answer. Great writing does not betray." However, ALAISTER MACAULAY of THE FINANCIAL TIMES was a little disappointed saying "The chemistry between the three characters does not ring true here, because the three actors appear to inhabit markedly different social circles." PAUL TAYLOR of THE INDEPENDENT is not too impressed either describing the play as a " Mildly disappointing production." JANE EDWARDES of THE TIMES describes the play as a "Hit and miss production."

NICHOLAS DE JONGH of EVENING STANDARD says, "I worry that the National's financial pressures may be driving Trevor Nunn to give house-room to pleasurable though trivial frivolities like this." PETER HEPPLE of THE STAGE says, "The only character who seems truly real is Barbara Windsor, played as a genuine innocent by Samantha Spiro, whose likeness to the original is uncanny."

Presse: MICHAEL COVENEY of THE DAILY MAIL says "A truly great evening."
BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE of THE TIMES says, "Has there ever been a higher standard of dance in any subsidised theatre? No."
CHARLES SPENCER of THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says "The National has a huge hit on its hands."
MICHAEL COVENEY of THE DAILY MAIL says "A truly great evening, easily the equal of Guys and Dolls and Carousel. Enjoy."
NICOLAS DE JONGH of THE EVENING STANDARD was more luke-warm saying " A rich feast of dream-pie, but not my kind of meal".

PETER HEPPLE of THE STAGE says "Shaw brings a lot of her own distinctive personality to the role of Jean Brodie, giving her a surprisingly sexy air…" BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE of THE TIMES said "Maybe Shaw could do more to bring out the baffled grief of the broken Brodie, but her emphasis surely serves the play well."
