Written by John Marston Directed by Caitlin McLeod

Résumé: Renaissance Genoa, and the sarcastic jester Malevole moves through its ducal court, dishing out his caustic commentary on the people attached to the city’s usurping duke: his lustful duchess, Aurelia; her lover Ferneze, and the vicious operator, Mendoza (the real power behind the throne). But this Malevole – this ‘malcontent’ – is not at all what he seems, for he is in fact Genoa’s rightful duke, bent on recovering his stolen birthright and exposing the filth and lies around him.

John Marston’s finest play was first performed in the Blackfriars playhouse by the Children of the Chapel, and later adopted and amplified by Shakespeare’s own company. With its obsession with lust, greed and violence, its dense Shakespearean allusion, Machiavellian villainy and savagely satirical comedy, The Malcontent is one of the masterpieces of the renaissance stage and perhaps the greatest Jacobean tragicomedy. The Malcontent will be performed by the Globe Young Players, a new company of talented 12 to 16-year-olds specially selected and trained by the Globe’s resident experts in the craft and performance of early modern drama.

Commentaires : About The Globe Young Players

In January 2014, Shakespeare’s Globe will be opening the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse – a 17th century reconstruction of an indoor Jacobean theatre that will be lit entirely by candlelight. As part of the first season in the new, indoor space, we will be performing The Malcontent with a new company of young players. This new company will be specially selected 12 to 16 year olds who will be given the once in a lifetime opportunity to train under the Globe’s own expert practitioners, on site, culminating in performing on stage.

Open to a range of acting abilities and experience, the Globe Young Players is a free scheme designed to select the best talent from around the UK by holding open auditions for 12 – 16 year olds from any background, anywhere in the UK. Successful applicants will work once a week for six months followed by an intensive rehearsal period, culminating in professionally staged performances of John Marston’s finest play, The Malcontent. For the first time in 400 years, The Malcontent will be performed and recreated by a company of young actors for whom this play was originally written, in the tradition of the child actor companies of Shakespeare’s time.

The Malcontent will play for 12 performances in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse from 3 to 19 April 2014, and will mark the finale of the Globe’s first ever winter season in the new indoor space.

The Young Players will be schooled in the craft and performance of Early Modern drama, and work with professionals in text, voice, movement, dance and fights.
