Avec: Rebecca Seale (Christine), Craig Heyworth (Robert), Keith Anthony Higham (William de Corsa) , Pippa Gebette, Shirley Darroch, Neil Moors, Sarah Mahoney, Susannah Moody

Commentaire: Once again the Bridewell Theatre provided a try-out for a new composer whose work was well received, with the music described as memorable and sometimes showing a surprising intensity. The book and lyrics were felt to be on the weak side, but generally this was felt to be a promising start.  (plus)

Joué durant  1 mois

Première preview: jeu. 02 septembre 2004
Première: jeu. 02 septembre 2004
Dernière: sam. 02 octobre 2004

Metteur en scène:
Chorégraphe: Mykal Rand •
Avec: Tee Jaye (Purlie), John Lyons (Cap ’n Cotchipee), Victoria Wilson James (Missy Judson), David Menkin (Charlie), Joanna Francis (Lutiebelle), Miguel Brown, Irene M. Forrester, Mykal Rand, Ife Kuku, Aaron Morgan, Peter Svensson, Craig Williams,

Commentaire: Based on Ossie Davies’s 1961 play “Purlie Victorious”, this opened on Broadway in March 1970, and after a quiet start became one of the big hits of the season. It ran for 688 performances and then went on tour before returning to New York for a brief run in 1972. (Gary Geld and Peter Udell would go on to further Broadway success in 1975 with “Shenandoah”.) This was its first production outside the USA, and although it would have been a trail-blazing piece at the time of the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, it was now felt to be no more than a tuneful, jolly but very dated piece of Black History.  (plus)

Avec: Mark Carroll (Giorgio), Clare Burt (Fosca), Kate Arneil {Clara), Matthew White (Colonel Ricci), Simon Masterton (Doctor Tambourri), David Menkin, Nigel Pilkington, Christopher Jay, William Kenning, Dominic Brewer

Commentaire: This small-scale revival marked the 10th anniversary show of the Bridewell company, and received a muted welcome from the critics. However, there was much praise for Clare Burt as Fosca.  (plus)

22) Victor Victoria (Revival)

Joué durant  2 semaines

Première preview: mar. 13 janvier 2004

Metteur en scène: Phil Willmott •
Chorégraphe: Jack Gunn •
Avec: Ria Jones (Victoria), Christopher Holt (Toddy), Mark Halliday (King Marchan), Stewart Alexander (Squash), Emma Barton (Norma), Matthew Daines

Commentaire: Originally a 1933 German play “Viktor und Viktoria” by Rheinhold Schunzel, the first English version was the 1935 Jessie Matthew film, “Just a Girl”. Blake Edwards re-made the film in 1982 with music and lyrics by Henry Mancini and Leslie Bricusse, and with his wife, Julie Andrews in the lead. In 1995 he adapted this into a Broadway musical, again starring Julie Andrews. Extra songs were needed and Mancini and Bricusse started work on the project, but sadly Mancini died, and newcomer Frank Wildhom completed the score. It opened in New York in October 1995 and ran for 734 performances. Julie Andrews was nominated for a Tony but rejected the nomination because, as she explained in a curtain speech, “However, flattered as I am, and honoured to be nominated, I have to say how deeply sad I am to be the only nominee in this extraordinarily gifted company.” However, Julie Andrews and the show received and won several other awards from the Drama Desk and Outer Circle critics. Julie Andrews stayed with the show for almost two years, during which she took a short holiday when Liza Minelli stood in. A great scandal ensued when the leading man walked out in protest at Minelli’s poor performance. When Julie Andrews finally left the show in June 1997 she was replaced with Raquel Welch, but without its legendary star, the show came off very quickly.  (plus)

Commentaire: Hugely praised as the “best new musical for years”, its music ranged from beautiful and lyrical ballads to true toe-tappers, and a rich score based on the ballads, hymns and drinking songs from the American folk tradition. Based on Maggie Greenwald’s 1993 film starring Suzy Amis, Bo Hopkins and Ian McKellen, this musical version was first staged in September 2000 at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater.  (plus)

Avec: Paula Wilcox (Cora), Janie Dee (Fay Apple), Edward Baker Duly (Dr Hapgood), James Smillie (Comptroller Schub), Mark Heenehan, Aaron Shirley, Orit Haddad, Simon Masterton.

Commentaire: The book for this production has been slightly revised by Arthur Laurents - currently in his mid-eighties - now including mentions of mobile phones and lap-top computers, but the general reaction remained the same: the show was a mess, but as an example of early Sondheim, far too interesting to ignore.  (plus)

Joué durant  1 mois

Première preview: ven. 02 novembre 2001
Première: ven. 02 novembre 2001
Dernière: dim. 02 décembre 2001

Metteur en scène: Matthew White •
Chorégraphe: Norma Atallah •
Avec: Cast: Sally Ann Triplett (Rebecca), Louis Constantine/Sam Morris (David), David Bardsley (Nathan Hershkowitz), Davor Golub (Saul), Alicia Davies (Bella Cohen), John Levitt (Avram), Jon-Paul Hevey (Ben Levitowitz), Susan Humphries, Sarah Counsell, Gareth Williams

Commentaire: This was the third time “Rags” had been staged in London, and it was also the third different version of the show. This time the production reverted to the (original) 1986 Broadway version as far as the running-order and plot development was concerned, but combined this with the cut-down scenery and reduced cast numbers of the rewritten 1991 American Jewish Theatre version. This Bridewell version used a four-piece Klezmer band (the other versions had been scored for full orchestra and two pianos respectively.) As always, the show received mixed notices, but there was unanimous praise for Sally Ann Triplett as Rebecca.  (plus)

Commentaire: The original off-Broadway production ran for just 28 performances in 1995, but thereafter it was much revived at smaller theatres and college venues in spite of its vocally demanding score. The music encompasses a wide range of styles, including pop, gospel, jazz and classical music.  (plus)

Chorégraphe:
Avec: Dele Adagunodo (Peachum), Mary King (Mrs Peachum), Victoria Ward (Polly Peachum), James Staddon (Macheath), Alexandra Howlett (Jenny Diver), Sophie Langham (Lucy Lockitt), Graham Kent (Lockitt)

Commentaire: This was a joint production between the English National Opera’s outreach programme and Cardboard Citizens, Britain’s only professional theatre company for the homeless. The anticipation was a telling comment on how little had changed from the 18th century’s attitude to the poor and the ruling class. But the end result was felt to be a bit of a mess: the show was frequently interrupted with video-diary sound-bites from both fictional characters and today’s real homeless projected on a bank of TV monitors; the action was held up with some strange karaoke-type pop songs including “Love and Marriage”, “It’s Not Unusual”, “Thank Heaven for Little Girls” and even “Jealousy”, sung by Lucy Lockit strapped into a wheelchair. . . It was generally considered to be well-intentioned, but an experiment that had not quite come off.  (plus)

Commentaire: The Gershwin satire opened in December 1931 and ran for 441 performances - one of the biggest Broadway hits of the 1930s - and won a Pulitzer Prize. In 1998 (the Gershwin Centenary Year) Opera North staged the British premiere in a touring production. This Bridewell production was its London debut.  (plus)

Commentaire: Originally a 1996 off-Broadway production, this show won several awards. Adam Guettel is the son of Mary Rodgers, and the grandson of composer Richard Rodgers. His music and lyrics for this show were much praised, with its style drawn from bluegrass, American folk and classical chorales and scored for an eight-piece band including harmonica, banjo and acoustic guitar.  (plus)

Commentaire: A sung-through piece with some 33 songs, this received a very mixed critical response: admiration for the performances and the attempt to create a “serious” musical, but general indifference to the unfocussed and humourless.  (plus)

Commentaire: This was planned for Sondheim’s Broadway debut in the early 1950s, but prior to the opening Lemuel Ayers, the producer, suddenly died from leukaemia. His widow decided to abandon the project and refused to release the rights to anyone else. The show remained unproduced for more than 40 years. In 1995 permission was granted for a group of students at Birmingham University to present a concert version, and this led to Sondheim allowing the Bridewell to stage this world premiere - a production of enormous interest to critics, performers and musical enthusiasts alike. It was well received.  (plus)

Alix Longman (Dominique), Nigel Williams, Bernard Tagliavini, Catherine Dyer, Paul Williams, James Nash (Tony Hendon)

Commentaire: Lucky Stiff premiered off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizon on April 1988 for a limited two week run. It subsequently was revived at various USA venues and received a British premiere in Lincoln in 1994. This West End production went down well with critics and audiences, and was felt to be one the rare occasions when a musical farce succeeded. (It is usually claimed that a farce needs non-stop pace and action, whereas songs in a show tend to slow down the action, making farces and musicals basically incompatible.)  (plus)

Dernière: sam. 11 janvier 1997

Metteur en scène: Clive Paget •
Chorégraphe: Louise Davidson •
Avec: Clive Carter, Rebecca Front

Commentaire: This is a compilation of Sondheim songs, most of them intended for, but cut from, other shows. They have been spun into a story of sorts, where a man and a woman are each alone in their respective apartments on Saturday night. They sing of loneliness and longing, although there is a glimmer of hope in the air. Finally, however, as the last song says: “It Wasn’t Meant to Happen”. Generally regarded as a treat for Sondheim lovers, but one critic acidly pointed out “this slight revue proves only that Sondheim knows which songs to dump”.  (plus)

Commentaire: With both couples played by the same performers, this was much
praised as being reminiscent of Sondheim, elegant, intelligent and worthy
of transfer.
Il will be transfered (with mostly a new cast) to the Gielgud Theatre. However, what had been delightful in the tiny Bridewell, now seemed “a balding musical on a low budget” in the West End. It ran for just over six weeks.  (plus)

Commentaire: This was the second production by the resident company at the newly opened Bridewell Theatre—a converted Victoria swimming bath and laundry, just off Fleet Street. There were acoustic and spatial problems with the new venue, and the peculiar effect of the orchestra being hidden in what used to be the swimming pool and the conductor occasionally popping his head above stage for the benefit of the singers. The production chose to use a mixed cast (the original had used an all-male cast in the Japanese Kabuki traditions). It was felt
that what had been big and unwieldy on the Coliseum stage at its premiere now gained a great deal from its more intimate setting and performance space, but generally the performance and production was felt to be a bit lacklustre and unexciting.  (plus)
